The Sox jumped out to a game 1 win behind "The Eck", Dennis Eckersley who scattered 6 hits over 9 innings.  Boston carried a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the 9th only to see Dick McAuliffe break bust up the shutout with a solo HR.  In game 2 the Tigers got a complete game 3 hit shutout from lefty Woody Fryman.  Detroit would score its' lone run in the 7th by taking advantage of a two base error and a couple of ground outs.  Bill "the spaceman" Lee of Boston came up on the short end even though he didn't give up an earned run.  Game 3 saw the Bosox return the favor by winning 1-0 when George "the boomer" Scott hit a walk off HR off Detroit starter Mickey Lolich to lead off the 9th.  Mike Torrez was brilliant as he tossed a complete game shutout.  Lolich made one mistake but it was costly.  Game 4 went into extra stanzas as Freddy Lynn knocked in Jerry Remy for the winner in the 10th off of Detroit starter Joe Coleman.  Both teams finally got a respectable performance from their hitter in this game.  Game 5 saw the end of Detroit's Cinderella run.  Up 3 games to 1 Boston decided to hold back Eckersley for game 6 in Detroit and instead started journeyman Jim Wright.  Detroit's arms were shot and they had to call on Tom Timmerman, who was 8-10 in the regular season.  Wright baffled the Tiger hitters all day and scattered 8 hits for a complete game shutout.  Boston hitters jumped on Timmerman early and often.  A 3 spot in the first inning put way too much pressure on Detroit's low grade offense.  Two more runs in the third and an additional run in the fourth gave the boys from Beantown an insurmountable lead.  Carlton Fisk went 3-4 and knocked in 3 of Boston's runs as time ran out for the Tigers.  Fisk hit .447 in a pitching dominated series.
