Series Stats: Red Sox and Brewers

Series Highlight Film...Game 1: Eckersley (Bos), Caldwell (MIL), Augustine (MIL), Fisk (BOS), Remy (BOS)...Game 2: Yaz (BOS)...Game 3: Torrez (BOS)...Game 4: Rice (BOS) WISCONSIN (UPI) - The 7th and 8th seeds in this Best of the 1970's tournament were the unlikeliest of finalists to appear in the ALCS.  Boston came in well rested after defeating both Oakland and Detroit in 5 games respectively.  Milwaukee came off an exciting 7 game series vs KC where they were down 3-0 and came back to win
This series started out exactly the same for the Brew Crew.  Unfortunately for them they could not summon the power of the baseball gods one more time and have a second consecutive 3 game deficit comeback.

The opening game pitted both team's aces against each other.  Lefty Dave Caldwell took the hill for the Brewers, while Boston trotted out 20 game winner Dennis "the Eck" Eckersley.  In the second inning Caldwell hurt his arm and had to leave the game.  Spot starter Eduardo Rodriguez entered the game in the 2nd and gave up only 3 runs in 7 innings.  The Eck gave up only 2, but the game was still knotted at 2 going into the bottom of the 8th when light hitting Jerry Remy popped one over the green monster for the Sox to take the lead.  The Brewers wouldn't go quietly in the 9th, so Bob Stanley had to come on to save the game.  Remy's story is quite interesting.  Being a lefty he wasn't in the starting line.  Instead Frank Duffy was tabbed to play second.  He entered the game in the 3rd to pinch hit for Duffy vs the right handed throwing Rodriguez.  Strange how these types of maneuvers seem to pay dividends in the post season.

Game two saw the Sox jump out to a 4-0 lead after two and never look back.  El Tiante was simply brilliant and a 9th inning solo shot by Ben Oglivie served as little more than window dressing.

The series headed west to County Stadium in Milwaukee for game 3.  Again the Sox jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back.  Mike Torrez scattered 6 hits enroute to a complete game shutout.

The series finale turned out to be the 4th game where a pair of lefties were set to face each other.  Boston had Bill "the spaceman" Lee on the hill and Milwaukee, who's pitching staff was depleted, was forced to rely on the erratic Jerry Augustine.  The game was tied at 1 going into the visitor's half of the 5th when Boston broke the game open by dropping a 5 spot on the Brew Crew.  Milwaukee looked to get out to the inning with minimal damage until future HOF'er Robin Yount made the 3rd of his 3 errors on the day.  By that point the floodgates had opened and there was no turning back.  The Sox tacked on another insurance run in the top of the 9th and the spaceman closed out the game for a complete game win and the series sweep.

When interviewed after the game Brewers manager Jesse Elicker was heard to say, "the bottom line is Milwaukee's bats went cold and Boston hit".  When asked by reporters if losing his ace, Mike Caldwell, in game 1 had a huge affect on the series he again referred to the fact that his team's bats went cold.

Boston heads to the World Series with an aggregate record of 12-2 over 3 series..
