MEMORIAL STADIUM (AP) - Short series' are supposed to favor the team with the better pitching.  Logic dictates that the '71 O's would be the favorite, since they had four 20 game winners on their staff.  With the O's up 3 games to 2 and heading back home the experts looked to be 100% correct in their prediction.

Unfortunately for the O's, the experts did not take into consideration the size of the Tigers heart and just how scrappy a ballclub they are.  Joe Coleman tossed a complete game shutout to force a game 7, where Bill Freehan blasted 2 HR's, one of which broke the 3-3 stalemate in the 8th inning.  Tom Timmerman, who was 8-10 during the season outdistanced his much more hearalded counterpart Pat Dobson (20-8).  The post season makes heroes out of the most unlikely characters.
