Series Stats: Phillies and Giants

Outstanding Game MVP: Schmidt (gm#1 & 3), Perry (gm#2), Cash (gm#3) & Underwood (gm#4) CANDLESTICK POINT (UPI) - The young up and coming Phillies served notice to the NL that they are ready to win now.  Facing a veteran Giants team that had aging stars and a history of coming up short the Phillies put the pedal to the metal jumped on the back of their all world third baseman Mike Schmidt to win in 5.  SF's lone bright spot was a game 2 shutout performance by Gaylord Perry.
To close out the Giants Tom Underwood threw the game of his life as he matched future HOF'er Juan Marichal pitch for pitch as the game moved to extra frames tied at 2.  It took until the 12 inning where the Phillies touched veteran Giants reliever Don McMahon for a 5 spot.  In the bottom of the inning SF had it's big guns farce Philly reliever Gene Garber who proceeded to strike out Bonds and McCovey, walk Dave Kingman and eventually get Dick Dietz to end the game and the series with a comebacker.
