Series Results:
Mets 2, Cubs 1: Chicago was on a roll heading into this series and might have taken the lowly Mets lightly...or Chicago's poor pitching might have finally come to the surface and hurt them.  the Cubs could have swept the series if they could have received at least some mediocre pitching at best.  Their bullpen, especially Don Elston, let them down in each game.  New York's Frank Thomas is having an improbable season and leads the league in HR's (25) and RBI's (71).  His .353 batting average puts him up there with a shot for the triple crown.  Time and time again in this series, the Cub pitchers decided to throw to Thomas when bases were open or there were 2 outs and Frank made them pay.  George Altman was the hitting star in game 2 for the Cubbies as he nailed 2 dingers himself.

Boxscores:

New York (N) Edges Chicago 9-8, 2 HRs For Thomas,F
Chicago Beats New York (N) 6-4, 2 HRs For Altman

Philles 2, Pirates 1:

Game 1(DH)-Law vs Short
Vern Law shut down the Phils by only giving up 8 scattered hits and the Bucs scored 5 and shut out the 2nd place Phils 5-0. Dick Stuart hit his 14th homer and hat 2 hits to lead the Pirates.

Game 2 (DH)-Friend vs Mahaffey
Fans were treated to an offensive fireworks display by both teams. It was a back and forth affair as the Phils seemed to have things under control in the bottom of the 8th as they scored 4 to take a 10-6 lead into the 9th. The Pirates battled against Rick Wise and scored 4 in the top of the 9th to tie it at 10. In the bottom of the 9th,pinch hitter Tony Gonzalez doubled and went to 3rd on a Tony Taylor grounder, Cookie Rojas hit a weak grounder and Gonzalez was safe at the plate to give the Phils an 11-10 win. Mazeroski had 5 hits for the Pirates and Danny Cater and Tony Taylor had 4 each for the Phils.

Game 3-Daniels vs Bennett
Well you would figure by the ERAs that this one would be more like game 2. Not to be. The Phils got 3 in the 4th by 2 triples from Roy Sievers and Tony Taylor. That wouldn't be the story of this game though. No-named pitcher Dennis Bennett pitched 8 and 1/3 innings of perfect baseball for the Phightins. Bill Mazeroski broke it up in the 9th but Bennett and the Phils went on to win the rubber game 3-0. Bennett added 11 K's to lead the way. The Phils are now ready to host the last place Mets for 4 at Shibe Park and The Pirates move on to Wrigley for 4 against teh Cubbies.

Series Results:
Giants 3, Cardinals 0: The Giants returned to Candlestick after having an average road trip and returned to glorious form crushing the Cards in a 3 game set.  Time and time again the Giants sluggers would knock in a key run with 2 outs.  St. Louis reverted back to the dreadful combination of poor offense and sub par hitting.  Ernie Broglio pitched his final game in a Cardinal uniform in the finale.  Rumor has it that he will be traded to Chicago for a light hitting outfielder named Brock.  How this is going to help the Cardinals is anyone's guess.

Series Results:
Reds 2, Dodgers 1: This was supposed to be the series where the Dodgers righted the ship and rode their dominant pitching to victory.  No one clued the Reds in on the battle plan.  Dodger aces Koufax and Drysdale gave up 5 and 6 runs respectively and the offense actually bailed them out in game 2 as Johnny Podres was good enough to win.  In the finale Jim O'Toole was the better lefty as he went the distance to best Koufax.  Frank Robby had some key hits, but for the first time all year his average dipped below .400.

Houston sweeps Milwaukee in a 3 game series.  This propels the Colt 45's back into the thick of the pennant race after they had been slumping the past few series.

Game 2:  Both team gets 3 runs in the 1st inning then Houston shuts down Milwaukee the rest of the way. -contributed by Jeff Shelton-

Game 2:  Houston scored 1st with Mejias and Larker (as usual) getting on.  Light hitting rookie catcher Merritt Ranew singled in Mejia with 2 outs.  the score stayed 1-0, until the top of the 8th when Milwaukee tagged Houston for 4 runs and what looked like a comfortable 3 run lead with 2 innings to go.  No lead is comfortable when Milwaukee's bullpen is entrusted to protected.  In the bottom of the 8th Houston slammed 3 runs off of the Braves hapless arms to tie the game at 4 and subsequently win it in the bottom of the 9th as Roman Mejias came through again and singled home Al Spangler. -contributed by distantreplay-
