Series Results:
Cardinals 3, Colt 45's 1: HEADLINE:  Lou Brock has arrived and the National League had better take notice.  We all know 1 man does not make a team, but this team was looking for 1 man and it looks like they have found him.  For the better part of two months the Redbirds have been suffering with sub-par talent in the corner outfield positions.  Lewis, Long, James and Clemens might all be nice guys, but they are not regular Left Fielders.  Brock wasn't that guy either in Chicago, but seems to have found his niche here in the Gateway city.  While 4 games is too soon to tell if Brock is the real deal, one can not argue with the spark that he has provided this moribund club.  Who can argue with a 9-19 (.474), 2 HR & 7 RBI output ?  Besides the individual achievements Brock sparked the rest of the Cardinal lineup, which scored 32 runs in the first 3 games of this series before getting blanked in the finale.  Sure the Cardinals are 14.5 back and in 8th place, but at least there is a glimmer of hope.  The only down side in this series was the finale where ace Bob Gibson wound up losing 6-0 to journeyman Hal Woodeshick.

Series Results:
Giants 3, Reds 2: Cincy came out smokin' and torched spot starter Jim Duffalo and company for 10 runs for an easy win.  Game 2 saw them take a 6-1 lead into the bottom of the 5th only to see them squander it.  The Giants scored 2 runs in that frame to cut the deficit to 3.  Then in the  bottom of the 7th the flood gates opened as San Fran posted 4 and took a 1 run lead.  The Dominican Dandy, Juan Marichal, had nothing today and was chased from the hill in the 5th inning.  Stu Miller came on in relief and tossed 3 scoreless frames as well as being the catlyst for the 7th inning comeback with a lead off single.  Harvey Kuenn subsequently tripled him home.  Wanting no part of the Say Hay kid, Cincy decided to pitch around him and face Cepeda and Alou.  Cepeda hit a sac fly to right to score Kuenn and Alou followed it up with a bases clearing double scoring Chuck Hiller (singled) and Mays (IBB).  Don Larsen came on in the ninth to batten down the hatches and give the Giants an improbably win.  In the finale Jack Sanford gave up only 2 runs and bested Cincy ace Joey Jay.  Frank Robby had a chance to tie it in the 9th, but instead grounded out weakly for the final out.  His average is now below .400.

Pirates 3, Mets 0: Without injured slugger Frank Thomas, the Mets basically have zero chance to win.  Other than game 2, where they posted 6 runs, the Mets had no offense...and it's a given that they will not receive any pitching.  The Pirates were efficient in this series sweep.  Concerning to Pittsburgh fans is the fact that Bob Friend gave up 6 runs to the punch-less Mets in game 2.  Friend did go 8 2/3 and finally ceeded to star reliever Roy Face who struck out the injured Thomas as he attempted to get a game tying pinch hit.  In the finale Vern Law cruised to a complete game 9-0 shutout.

Dodgers 3, Braves 0: The opener saw a battle of All-Star lefties as Koufax and Spahn both took the hill.  The crafty old lefty Spahn outduelled the fireballer (Koufax) as the Braves took game 1.  Spahn fanned 10 Dodgers while going the distance and evening his season record at 5.  The Dodgers, who have been in a tailspin of late took the bull by the horns and got timely hitting and superior pitching from their next 3 starters (Miller, Drysdale and Podres).  Drysdale was masterful in game 3, which was a much welcome rebound from his recent funk.  Milwaukee All-Star Hank Aaron had his 25 game hitting streak snapped by John Podres in the finale.  Dodger reliever Ron Perranoski saved all three games that LA won notching his 5th, 6th and 7th saves on the season.  Light hitting Dick Tracewski hit his first HR of the year in the finale to put LA on top for good.
