San Fran plated 2 runs in the first and almost batted around. Catcher Tom Haller failed to deliver the deciding blow with two outs and the bases loaded. Cincy felt life and struck back with one of their own in the bottom of the frame after Wally Post and the red hot Vada Pinson singled. Frank Robby hit one deep and was happy to accept a sac fly to cut the deficit by 1. Giant starter Bill O'Dell got rattled in the 2nd with Reds third sacker Gene Freese singled and stole second as the Giants napped. Cincy put together a mini rally and scored 2 to take a 1 run lead. In a blink of an eye the Giants high octane offense struck back. Jim Davenport and Tom Haller both connected for back to back solo shots off of Red starter Joey Jay to help San Fran retake the lead . The Giants tacked on 2 more in the 4th as Cepeda doubled home 2 and 1 more in the 5th as pitcher Bill O'Dell got into the action by recording a sac fly. Wally Post lead off the 5th for the Reds with a single and reached third as Giant hurler Bill O'Dell allowed Vada Pinson to reach first on a throwing error. The irrepresable Frank Robby stepped to the plate and promptly deliver a 365 foot 3 run shot to bring the Reds to within 1. offensive shootouts are the Giants specialty which was only re-afirmed when Tom Haller delivered a 3 run shot of his own to make the score 10-6 and thus redeaming himself for not delivering in the opening frame. That shot was the last straw and Reds starter Joey Jay was sent to the shower in favor of reliver of Howie Nunn. Jay Hook came on to relive for the Reds in the 8th and promptly served up a 2 run shot to Haller to put the game out of reach as San Fran swept this short 2 game set at Crosley Field..

Game 1: Welcome to Sportsman's Park III where Houston will take on St. Louis. Hal Woodeshick starts for Houston. He's made 9 starts on the year and is 2 and 4 with an ERA of 3.18. He'll be opposed by Ray Sadecki. He's made 10 starts on the year and is 2 and 7 with an ERA of 4.60. It's 82 degrees, wind speed 5 mph, out to lcf. Play Ball!

The revitalized Cardinal offense struck early by dropping a 3 spot on Houston in the opening stanza. Surprisingly this rally was occurred all with 2 out and without Curt Flood or new found savior Lou Brock on base. Bill White and Ken Boyer both singled off of Houston starter Hal Woodeshick. Rightfielder Carl Warwick walked to load the bases. Shortstop Dick Groat promptly singled home White and Boyer and Julian Javier followed that up with a single of his own to plate Warwick. Well Houston has Carl Warwick too and he wasn't going to be outdone by his later iteration. Warwick promptly recorded hit 9th homer of the year...a tape measure shot that went an estimated 432 feet to dead center. Cardinal starter Ray Sadecki, who has been plain awful all year, walked catcher Hal Smith and then served up Bob Aspromonte's 7th homer of the year to tie the contest at 3. The Cardinals struck back in the bottom of the inning when Curt Flood doubled and moved to third on a Brock sacrifice. Bill White singled sharply to left and the Cards handed Sadecki his second lead of the day. Houston starter Hal Woodeshick tired in the 5th and St. Louis tagged him for 2 more runs before he gave way to mop up man Dave Giusti. Carl Warwick delivered 2 runs with a hard hit double and catcher Tim McCarver delivered Warwick with a clutch sac fly. The speedy Brock helped manufacture another run in the bottom of the 6th as he singled and immediately stole second, moved to third on a Bill White sac fly and scored on a Ken Boyer hit. Sadecki didn't allow the faltering Colt 45's another hit enroute to a complete game victory.

Game 2: Welcome to Sportsman's Park III for today's game between Houston and St. Louis. Turk Farrell will start for Houston. He's made 11 starts on the year and is 7 and 6 with an ERA of 2.83. He'll be opposed by Roger Craig. He's made 5 starts on the year and is 1 and 5 with an ERA of 5.77. It's 91 degrees, wind speed 25 mph, right to left. Play Ball!

Houston struck first by scoring in the top of the 1st. St. Louis minimized the damage by walking pitching around Mejia and Larker. Carl Warwick hit a sac fly to score Al Spangler who lead off with a walk. Ken Boyer tripled to lead off the 2nd for St. Louis and wound up scoring on a hard grounder that came off of the bat of 1960 NL MVP Dick Groat. Houston took the lead in the top of the 6th with some timely hitting and some great baserunning. Roger Craig violated the Cardinal (all puns intended) rule of pitching by walking the leadoff hitter (Norm Larker). Carl Warrick followed that up with a clean single. Catcher Merritt Ranew advanced the runners with a cgreat bunt. Craig then gave an intentional pass to Bob Aspromonte in order to face light hitting Bob Lillis, who took great offense to this strategy. Lillis singled in 2 runs and gave Houston the lead. With everything seemingly in control for Houston starter Turk Farrell the Cardinals entered the bottom of the 9th down by 2. Ever the catalyst Lou Brock lead off with a double. Brock's speed can rattle even the coolest of customers and when Farrell lost focus that he had a hitter to get out Bill White proudly accepted his free pass to first. With runners on first and second and Farrell losing his stamina and concentration a hanging curve ball to Ken Boyer found it's way into the left center field pavilion to end the game and put the Cardinals on top. Boyer reached home and was mobbed by his teammates as the renaissance of the Cardinals continues. St. Louis is now 7-2 with Brock in the lineup.

Game 3: Welcome to Sportsman's Park III where Houston will take on St. Louis. Houston has lost 5 straight, and 8 of their last 10. Jim Golden will start for Houston. He's made 9 starts on the year and is 3 and 5 with an ERA of 5.51. He'll be opposed by Bob Gibson. He's made 14 starts on the year and is 6 and 7 with an ERA of 2.83. It's 78 degrees, wind speed 5 mph, left to right. Play Ball!

St. Louis broke the ice in the 2nd when Tim McCarver doubled home Bob Skinner. Houston answered back in the top of the 3rd as Bob Aspromonte lead off with a single and second baseman Bill Goodman reached on an error by Julian Javier. Pitcher Jim Golden bunted both runner up 1 base and 2 batters later Al Spangler singled them both home as Houston took a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning Ken Boyer lead off with a single and promptly moved to third on a Al Skinner double. Both runners scored as shortstop Dick Groat hit his 1st homer of the season. That was all the scoring the great Bob Gibson would need as he went on to fan 10 Houston batters en-route to a complete game victory, which evened his record at 7. The red hot cardinals moved to within 5 games of .500, which is a huge accomplishment for a team that was languishing in 9th place. Houston (35-36) dropped below .500 for the first time all season after being swept by the Redbirds.

Both teams plated 1 run in the first. The Dodgers did it in their classic manufacturing format and the Braves did it their way with a Eddie Mathews long ball. In the third inning Brave starter Warren Spahn was victimized by the long ball off the bat of Jumbo Frank Howard. Howard's 3 run shot gave LA a 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the 4th Milwaukee got the long ball working for them as Wes Covington hit a 2 run shot to make it 4-3. Two innings later Joe Adcock delivered his own 2 run blow to put the Braves up by a run. The Dodgers struck back in the top of the 7th with 3 of their own as they chased Warren Spahn from the hill. Ron Piche had to come in to put out the fire, but the damage was already done. Lee Walls started it off with a pinch hit single to lead off the inning. Nate Olver pinch ran for him and advanced to second on a Maury Wills hit. Tommy Davis tripled them both in and he scored as Frank Howard got a hit of his own. LA brought on Larry Sherry (7th), Ron Perranoski (8th) and Ed Roebuck (9th) to close out the game and gain the series sweep over the Braves.
