R-Bob Friend (4-1, 3.07)   @   R-Ken Hunt (1-0, 3.10)

Scouting Report:
Pirates: Took 2 out of 3 from the Cards in 3 high scoring affairs.  They have their top 2 hurlers going in this series vs a Cincy team who's bats are just starting to heat up..

Reds: Took 3 of 4 from the Mets and looked to have awakened from their hitting malaise.  Of course anyone's bats can heat up vs the Mets arms.  Frank Robby is looking to put up triple crown #'s.

Series Results:
Reds 2, Pirates 0: Cincy is on a roll.  First they take 3 of 4 from the Mets, then they sweep 2 games from the first place Pirates.  Game 1 saw the Pirates send Vern Law to the hill sporting a 0.75 ERA and a 4-0 record.  Law was good giving up 2 runs in 7 innings, but Cincy starter Tom Purkey was better tossing a 2 hit shutout.  The Reds loaded the bases in the 4th inning and scored first on a walk and then on a squeeze play.  Game 2 saw the Reds jump out to a nice 6-0 lead by the 7th.  Ken Hunt gave up a run in the 8th and was pulled in favor of Marshall Bridges to start the 9th.  Bridges didn't have it and the Pirates score 5 runs and almost pulled off the improbable comeback.  Jim Brosnam had to come out of the bullpen to get all 3 outs in the 9th and record his second save.  Reds third baseman Gene Freese went 4-4 and had a HR.  Frank Robby is still red hot, hitting .444.

Scouting Report:
Mets: Frank Thomas is still in the top 10 in the triple crown hitting categories.  Starter Jay Hook has 3 of the team's 4 wins and gives the Mets a chance to win when he's out there.

Braves: Milwaukee took 2 of 3 from Philly, but they won't have Burdette and Spahn going in this series.  Thankfully they are facing the Mets.  Aaron isn't hitting the long ball.  He's due to break out and big..

Series Results:
Braves 2, Mets 0: The Braves pulled off an expected sweep over the Amazins.  In game 1 Bob Buhl went the distance and gave up 4 runs against a Mets team that yielded 8.  Leadoff man Billy Bruton went 4 for 5 and had 2 RBI's and 1st baseman Ray Boone also knocked in 2 with a 3 for 4 day.  Frank Thomas continued his hot hitting for NY, but one man can not carry the day.  In game 2 the Amazins made it close, but in the end a familiar storyline...not enough pitching.  Jay Hook, who seems to be the only starter who can win a game, pitched fine.  In fact the contest was tied at 4 going into the last of the 9th when again NY's pitching let them down.  Galen Cisco, who was working his 3rd inning of relief, couldn't hold the powerful Brave offense down one more time.  Wes Covington led off with a double and promptly advanced to third on a routine ground out by Felix Mantilla.  Catcher Del Crandall was given an intentional pass to setup the double play possibility.  The Braves decided to pinch hit for starter Carl Willey with Lee Maye who worked out a walk to load the bases.  Bill Bruton stepped up and drove the ball to deep left as Covington tagged up and walked home with the winning run..

R-Jim Bunning (3-0, 1.59)   @   R-Ray Washburn (0-0, 0.00)

Scouting Report:
Phillies: Bunning took the first game vs Milwaukee then the Phills proceeded to drop the next 2.  Bunning will face recent call up Ray Washburn in the series finale.  Richie Allen is swinging a hot stick.

Cards: Gibson got a win vs the Mets in his last outing and is hoping to get some momentum going.  Without him in top form the Cards stand no chance of contending.  McCarver seems to be their most steady bat, but he can't play every day behind the plate or he'll be dead.

Series Results:
Phillies 1, Cards 1: Each game was a huge blow out with both teams scoring a bushel full of runs for their respective aces.

Game 1: Bennett vs. Gibson

Game 1 begins poorly for Bob Gibson and the Cardinal. In the top of the 1st Johnny Callison deposits 2-1 Gibson fastball into the RCF seats for a 1-0 Phillies lead. St. Louis answers in the 2nd with a solo shot from Charlie James. James would homer again in the 4th. In all St.Louis hits 4 dingers and runs away with this one by a score of 8-1. Gibson settles down after the 1st and strikes out 10.

Game 2: Bunning vs. Washburn

Philadelphia wastes no time in avenging their game 1 loss, blowing out St. Louis 12-2 behind great days from Johnny Callison, Dick Allen, and Jim Bunning. Bunning runs his record to 4-0, tossing 6 innings of 1 run ball. Johnny Callison continues his torrid pace, knocking out 2 more HRs and driving in 4. Dick Allen collects 3 hits in 6 Abs including a triple and an RBI. Jack Baldschun throws 3 innings of relief for the Phillies, striking out 5 and allowing 1 unimportant run in the 9th.

Boxscores:
Philadelphia Pounds St. Louis 12-2, 2 HRs For Callison

Scouting Report:
Cubs: The Cubbies decided to start their June swoon in May, by losing 5 of their last 6.  The schedule maker put together this strange 1 game set in LA and I suspect the Cubs just might mail it in..

Dodgers: LA must rebound from losing 2 of 3 to SF in a series that could have easily gone the other way.  Larry Sherry turned the clock back to 1959 and put in a command performance to capture the series finale.  LA is looking for John Podres to put in a 1955 performance vs the hapless Cubbies.  Fairly and Wills are both hitting over .350.  LA is 1/2 game out of 1st.

Series Results:
Cubs 1, Dodgers 0: The schedule maker threw this quirky 1 game series on the docket, while the other clubs were playing a two game set.  Both teams had southpaws on the hill, so their regular lineups were a little bit jumbled.  For 7 innings Jack Curtis and John Podres had a good old fashioned duel in the sun going.  To lead of the 8th LA decided to lift Podres for a pinch hitter and take their chances on breaking the stalemate.  Ken McMullen did his job by promptly lining a single to center.  Unfortunately for the Dodgers he was only able to get as far as third.  Even more unfortunate was the fact that reliever Ed Roebuck handed 4 runs to the Cubs and the game.

Scouting Report:
Colt 45's: Coming off a great series vs Chicago (2 of 3) the Colts rebounded nicely and are back in it.  Roman Mejias has been swinging a hot bad and making the Pirates regret leaving him unprotected in the expansion draft.  Curiously the Colts will trot out 2 lefties vs the Giants who have a potent righty lineup.

Giants: Took 2 of 3 from LA and seem to be hitting their stride.  They have the best everyday lineup in the NL and the best everyday player in Willie Mays (.343).  Game 1 starter Gaylord Perry pitched a gem in his last outing and staved off a 1 way ticket to triple A.  Lefty Bill O'Dell takes an unblemished record into game 2.

Series Results:
Giants 1, Colt 45's 1: Houston scored in 6 of 9 innings to out-slug the heavy hitting Giants in this match-up.  The Colts refuse to accept that they are an expansion team and should consistently drop these games to their more seasoned opponents.  San Fran bounced back to gain a split by getting a decent performance off of young Gaylord Perry.  Rookie Manny Mota went 3 for 7 in the series for the Giants who now have 5 starters hitting over .300.  Roman Mejia is now hitting .383 with 7 HR and 28 RBI for the Colts.
