Series Recaps:

 Forbes Field | 5/6-5/7
stl 1964-STL (8-11) 9th   @   Pirates 1960-PIT (13-7) 1st
3 L-Ray Sadecki (0-1, 0.00)   @   9 L-Harvey Haddix (1-3, 2.96)
4 L-Curt Simmons (3-1, 4.65)   @   5 R-Bob Friend (4-1, 3.07)

Scouting Report:
Pirates: Lost sole possession of 1st place after getting swept by the Reds.  Haddix (game 1) has been a hard luck starter who hasn't gotten much in the way of run support.  Friend has gotten the runs and has been very consistent on the hill.

Cards: Coming off a split with the Phils the Cards send 2 southpaws to the hill.  This shouldn't affect the Pirates lineup much since they platoon in the OF and behind the plate.

Series Results:
Pirates 2, Cards 0: The Pirates got back to their winning ways at Forbes Field by sweeping the punchless Cards.  The pitching matchups looked dead even, but the Pirates had a big advantage in both everyday lineup and bullpen.  Elroy Face loomed large in this series as he put out 2 fires and notched his 2nd and 3rd saves on the season.  Game one was closer than the final score indicated as Sadecki's was let down by his fielders, including gold glover Bill White who made a costly error that opened the flood gates.  The Pirates maintained their tie with LA for first, while the Cards fell back into the second division.

PBP Highlights:
Clemente Strikes First: Clemente steps in against Simmons,C .356 average on the season 4 home runs and 19 RBI's on the season hitting .333 with a homer with runners in scoring position he's red hot in May hitting .407 for the month .. runners at the corners Simmons,C has the sign 0 balls, 2 strikes Clemente swings.. here's a deep fly ball to left way back it might be out of here James,C backing up home run! MIL 1960-MIL (9-10) 6th   @   LAD 1964-PHI (10-10) 5th
7 R-Lew Burdette (2-0, 4.08)   @   12 L-Chris Short (0-0, 0.00)
2 L-Warren Spahn (2-2, 2.73)   @   4 R-Ray Culp (1-3, 6.86)

Scouting Report:
Braves: Send their top 2 starters to the hill to face the bottom of Philadelphia's rotation.  Burdette has shown signs of coming alive in his last 2 starts.  Spahn has had to struggle to be 2-2 even though his ERA has been fantastic.

Phillies: Lefty Chris short gave up no runs in his first outing of the year.  He was pulled after 6.2 innings and didn't factor into the decision.  Ray Culp has been throwing BP all year.  No reason to think he's capable of baffling the likes of Aaron and Mathews and company.

Series Results:
Phillies 2, Braves 0: Milwaukee looked to have the pitching match ups squarely in their favor, but one can not discount how much bullpen strength factors into the equation.  Burdette was steady early on, but ran out of gas as the Philly bats got hot.  Spahn had a no hitter into the 8th lost the no-no, the shutout and the game all in that inning.  Lack of bullpen support force Milwaukee to leave in both starters way past their peak.  Philly moved into contention as Milwaukee lost all the ground they had recently been gaining.

PBP Highlights:
Eddie Mathews 5th HR: The third baseman Mathews steps in hitting .303 on the year with 4 home runs and 16 runs batted in he's red hot in May hitting .450 for the month .. man on 2nd 0-1 count fastball Mathews cuts.. here's a well hit fly ball down the right field liway back it's got a chance to go Callison racing back .. home run! HR number 5 for Mathews that one measured 340 feet 2nd.

3 R-Glen Hobbie (0-3, 5.91)   @   2 L-Bill O'Dell (2-0, 2.73)
4 L-Jim Brewer (0-0, 7.50)   @   11 R-Juan Marichal (5-0, 2.20)

Scouting Report:
Cubs: The Cubs look to have found a star in George Altman who has moved into the everyday lineup.  Unfortunately they do not have any hidden gems to send out on the hill.  Glen Hobbie and Jim Brewer both bring inflated ERA's to Candlestick and hope to hold back the Bay Area Bombers.

Giants: Bill O'Dell looks to be a fine compliment to Marichal, who is off to a fantastic 5-0 start.  Mays is still pacing the offense that looks to find a spot to 1960 ROY Stretch McCovey.

Series Results:
Cubs 1, Giants 1: Glen Hobbie brought his A-game and the Giants bats were held in check for most of the afternoon.  Bill O'Dell was pretty good, but not good enough.  In game 2 the Cubs paid dearly for starting a lefty vs SF's potent righty lineup.  Mays and the boys tagged Jim Brewer early and often to gain a series split.  Recent callup Manny Mota chipped in with a few hits and has a batting average over .300.  The Giants will be hard pressed to find him a spot in their already potent lineup.

PBP Highlights:
Banks Breaking the ice in Game1: Banks now batting hitting .247 on the year with 5 home runs and 17 runs batted in .. runner on 2nd O'Dell gets the sign from Bailey 0-2 count Banks swings.. flied deep down the left field line Mota back pedaling it's gone! that's number 6 for 'Mr. Cub' a 345 foot homer

Billy Williams Extends Hitting Streak to 18: Williams,B will get this inning started hitting a robust .403 on the season with 6 home runs and 18 runs batted in Williams,B riding a 17 game hit streak Bouchee is on deck .. the pitch curveball Williams,B cuts.. hammered to right center very well hit gone! HR number 7 for Williams,B a 371 foot blast Williams,B has hit safely in 18 straight games

1 L-Jim O'Toole (1-2, 2.65)   @   12 L-Al Jackson (0-4, 4.85)

Scouting Report:
Reds: The Reds took 3 of 4 from the Mets in their last meeting and have won 5 of their last 6 contests.

Mets: NY is in a freefall.  Little lefty Al Jackson hopes to stem the tide against the surging Reds.  Frank Thomas is the only Met bat that scares opposing pitchers.  The short fence in left field in the Polo Grounds should help his cause verse a lefty starter (O'Toole).

Series Results:
Mets 1, Reds 0: Little lefty Al Jackson stymied the Reds offense all afternoon and the Mets anemic bats came alive.  It was a good combination that doesn't seem to happen all that often for New York.  Cincy was hot going in and definitely lost momentum as the Mets laid into their ace, Jim O'Toole.

PBP Highlights:
Hickman goes deep to start the scoring: Hickman will bat first this inning batting .182 2 home runs and 6 RBI's on the season he's hitting just .192 in May .. 0-2 count Hickman swings.. fly ball towards left center it's well hit way back it's got a chance to go Robinson,F chasing back .. Home Run Jim gets number 3 a 459 foot shot!

Marvelous Marv busts it Wide Open: Throneberry now up at the plate man on 2nd 1-0 count cutter Throneberry cuts.. Throneberry really got a hold of this one flied down the right field line well hit Bell racing back .. at the wall out of here! that's Throneberry's first home run 269 foot blast 2nd

HOU 1962-HOU (12-9) 4th   @   LA 1963-LA (13-7) 1st
1 R-Jim Golden (2-0, 4.26)   @   6 R-Bob Miller (1-1, 3.67)
2 R-Turk Farrell (2-0, 0.00)   @   4 R-Don Drysdale (4-0, 2.30)

Scouting Report:
Colts: Houston's offense has been playing way over their head.  Chances are that won't continue vs 2 of LA's top 3 starters.  Turk Farrell is undefeated and hasn't given up a run.  LA's offense might not challenge him with the long ball, but he'll be forced to keep Wills and Gilliam off the basepaths or they will run wild.

Dodgers: Bob Miller looks to be rounding into form and Drysdale has been plain dominant.  LA's tablesetters have been reaching base, but the heart of their lineup has not been able to come through

Series Results:
Dodgers 2, Colt 45's 0: The Colt 45's have been so good at hanging close and keeping things close.  In this series their inexperience began to show through as the Dodgers pitching was spot on and the Colts were not able to get anything going.  Drysdale went the distance in game 2 and scattered 10 hits.  The Dodger fielding was sensational pulling a key double play in the 7th when Norm Larker hit a hot smash.  The DP kept Houston from tying up the game at that point.
