Scouting Report:
Reds: Was on a hot streak, then dropped 1 to the Mets in blow out fashion.  Their starters are just not getting it done.  Frank Robby is hitting in the .440's and leading the league.  Pinson is starting to heat up and make some noise.

Phillies: Swept Milwaukee and moved into the first division.  Chris Short had an excellent outing in his debut after being called up from triple A.  Bunning is throwing tablet.  Johnny Callison's is leading the league in homers (7) and is a threat every time he steps to the plate.

Series Results:
Reds, 2 Phillies 0: Cincy still isn't getting much pitching, but their bats are red (all puns intended) hot. Frank Robby is still hitting way over .400 and has gotten every clutch hit imaginable.  Game #2 on  paper looked to be a great pitching duel.  Purkey had to rebound and Bunning was posting Cy Young type numbers.  Looking at the final score you'd have to think it was the Bengals vs Eagles and not Reds/Phillies.  In the finale the Reds just scored in droves, while Philly couldn't mount much offense.  Johnny Callison banged out 3 HR's in the series, which included 2 difference makers in game 1.  Vada Pinson is heating up.  He has picked his BA up almost 50 points in the last week and is now batting in the .270's.

Scouting Report:
Cards: The Cards are sinking fast.  The offense is virtually non-existent and the pitching has been mediocre at best.  Gibson has won his last 2 start and looks to be putting it all together.  Broglio has been just plain awful.  Rumor has it his arm is not right.

Mets: New York pounded Cincy in their one game set in blow out fashion.  Unfortunately scoring 12 runs in 1 game doesn't seem to have a carry over affect for this crew of mishaps.  Al Jackson went the distance in that contest and gave up only 1 run.  Roger Craig is on the hill for the opener here.  He needs to show some veteran leadership and carry this team.  Jay Hook is going in game 3 and he's been New York's best starter at 3-1.  Bob Moorehead gets another chance on the hill.  He's been knocked around more than a punching bag.  Newcomer Vinegar Bend Mizell was acquired from Pittsburgh and will get his first start in the finale.  Mizell played on Pittsburgh's 1960 Championship sqaud.

Series Results:
Mets 3, Cards 1: How low can St. Louis sink ?  After taking game #1 in a shootout with the Mets the Cards proceeded to drop 3 straight, including the series finale doubleheader.  Curt Flood won game #1 with 2 huge homers.  The Cards were poised to do what everyone else does...beat up on the Mets.  Unfortunately for the Redbirds New York wasn't about to lay down and just hand the series over.  With Bob Gibson on the hill, riding a personal 2 game win streak, the Cards looked to have the pitching matchup firmly on their side.  Mets starter Bob Moorehead was sporting an ERA over 10 and a fastball that was double A at best.  Gibson pitched well, but Moorehead pitched better by allowing only 1 earned run on 3 hits.  Gibson was lifted after 7 for a pinch hitter and was down by 2.  Bobby Shantz came on in relief and gave the Mets an insurance run by serving one up to Marvelous Marv.  Game 3 was knotted at 3 going into the bottom of the 6th when the Mets lifted starter Jay Hook (4-1) for a pinch hitter (Richie Ashburn).  The light hitting Ashburn stepped to the plate with 2 outs and a man on and promptly delivered a Roger Craig forkball over 500 feet into the centerfield clubhouse.  The 35 year old Ashburn shocked the world by hitting a this tape measure shot.  The Cards never recovered and proceeded to go quietly in the nightcap 7-2.

8 L-Dean Stone (1-3, 5.64)   @   10 L-Dick Ellsworth (0-2, 4.55)

Scouting Report:
Colts: Dropped 2 to LA and really came down to earth.  These 2 games vs Chicago are very winnable and are a must if they want to get back on track.  For the first 2 weeks of the season people started believing that this rag tag bunch of castoffs might have something special.  Ken Johnson has been great on the hill and he looks to best Glen Hobbie in game 2.  Dave Giusti and Dean Stone are struggling.  Norm Larker and Roman Mejias are the offense for this team.  Mejias has been knocking down walls and Larker has been knocking in runs.

Cubs: After splitting with the Giants the Cubs hope to continue winning as they face Houston for 3 at the "friendly confines" of Wrigley Field.  George Altman has been a great find and seems to be a fixture in the everyday lineup.  Banks and Williams are getting hot as both homered in the SF series.  Glen Hobbie is coming off his best performance, a win, vs the Giants and hopes to continue his winning ways.

Pre-game:
Game 1: Welcome to Wrigley Field where it's Houston against Chicago. Dave Giusti takes the mound for Houston. He's made 3 starts on the year and is 0 and 2 with an ERA of 11.02. He'll be opposed by Don Cardwell. He's made 3 starts on the year and is 2 and 1 with an ERA of 5.19. Chicago left fielder Billy Williams is riding a 19 game hitting streak. It's 65 degrees. Play Ball!
Game 2: Welcome to Wrigley Field for today's game between Houston and Chicago. Ken Johnson takes the mound for Houston. He's made 4 starts on the year and is 3 and 1 with an ERA of 2.28. He'll be opposed by Glen Hobbie. He's made 5 starts on the year and is 1 and 3 with an ERA of 4.60. Chicago left fielder Billy Williams is riding a 20 game hitting streak. It's 74 degrees, wind speed 15 mph, right to left and we have light rain. Play Ball!
Game 3: Welcome to Wrigley Field for today's game between Houston and Chicago. Dean Stone takes the mound for Houston. He's made 5 starts on the year and is 1 and 3 with an ERA of 5.64. He'll be opposed by Dick Ellsworth. He's made 4 starts on the year and is 0 and 2 with an ERA of 4.55. Chicago left fielder Billy Williams is riding a 21 game hitting streak. It's 66 degrees and we have light rain. Play Ball!

4 R-Joey Jay (0-1, 8.10)   @   15 L-Harvey Haddix (1-3, 2.96)

Scouting Report:
Braves: Dropped two in Philly with there top 2 starters going (Burdette/Spahn).  Spahnie had a no hitter going for 7 1/3 then the floodgates opened an not only did he lose his no hit bid he lost the game.  This series they have the bottom of the rotation going.  It doesn't look promising.

Pirates: They swept the Cards at Forbes and they have their top 2 starters going in this 4 game set.  Vern Law has be Cy Young like and Bob Friend has been a fine compliment.  Harvey Haddix has a fine ERA, but nothing to show for it.  Clemente's bat has cooled a bit, but he's still over .300 and very dangerous.

Series Results:
Pirates 2, Braves 2: The Braves were happy to get a split with the first place Pirates.  Pittsburgh needed more than a split to keep pace with the surging Giants.

Scouting Report:
Dodgers: Swept Houston and knocked the expansion Colts back into reality.  At 15-7 they are tied for 1st with Pittsburgh.  Things aren't looking good for them in this series as Koufax's arm is sore and Larry Sherry will again fill in for him.  Sherry looked good in his last outing, but he's not Koufax.  Pete Richert is going in the season finale, which is going to be a tough one since SF has a fantastic righty oriented lineup..

Giants: So called Giant ace Jack Sanford is struggling to get batters out.  LA's banjo hitting lineup should help cure him.  Bill Pierce has given up runs as well.  Gaylord Perry has been like a yo-yo and needs to put together another good start or he'll be heading to Phoenix for some seasoning.  Mays, Cepeda and Alou are hitting over .300 and driving in runs.  Rookie Manny Mota had a good series with the bas vs Chicago.  Unfortunately for him there just doesn't seem to be a position in the field for him to play as SF looks stacked.

Series Results:
Dodgers 2, Giants 1: LA was worried about the pitching matchups in this series.  Larry Sherry won his second straight and Bob Miller tossed a shutout (behind 9 runs).  In the series finale Gaylord Perry got a lot of run support and held on to prevent the sweep.  Willie Mays' batting average dipped below .300 for the first time this year.  The Say Hey kid is the "lynch pin" for the SF offense.  LA got 2 colossal homers from "Jumbo" Frank Howard in their game 2 blowout..
