Brave New World

A quick 3 game sweep by the Braves dispatches the upstart Friars.

Game 1 - [Atlanta Fulton County Stadium]  - Braves 2, Padres 0
John Smoltz was at his true dominant best. Acquired from the Tigers at the trade deadline in 1987 for Doyle Alexander, Smoltz proved to be the most versitile pitcher the Braves organization ever had. He could start. He could relieve. He could flat out pitch, which is what he did here in the series opener by tossing a 4 hit shutout. His opposite number, Randy Jones, went the distance but yielded solo runs in the 3rd and 5th innings. Jones needed to be perfect to just keep pace with Smotlzie. Atlanta's first run came in the third when Henry Aaron singled home Ralph Garr. In the 5th Dale Murphy tripled home Aaron with two outs. That's all the offense Smoltz would need.

Game 2 -  [Atlanta Fulton County Stadium]  - Braves 6, Padres 2
Tommy Glavine was almost as sharp as his buddy Smoltz as the Braves again held the Friars offense in check. Glavine gave up 1 earned run in 8 2/3 innings of work before giving way to Gene Garber who notched the save by recording the final out. Down 1-0 in the 2nd the Braves exploded for 4 runs off of Padre starter Clay Kirby, who didn't make it past the 6th. After Ralph Garr singled home Billy Bruton, Rico Carty hit a 3 run shot. Raphael Ramirez singled home Eddie Mathews in the third to make it 5-1. SD's lone earned run came on a 2nd inning solo shot by Nate Colbert.

Game 3 -  [Jack Murphy Stadium] - Braves 9, Padres 3
Warren Spahn went the distance and gave up 3 runs to close out the series vs the hapless Friars. The Padres were up 1-0 in the 6th when starter Eric Show was ejected for arguing balls and strikes. Show had a 1 hitter going at the time and looked to be in firm control of the Brave offense. Gary Ross came on board and got lit up like a Christmas tree to the tune of 9 runs (5 earned). That put the game and the series out of reach. Dave Winfield, who hit .385 in the series, went 4 for 5 in a losing cause. Felix Millan was the offensive hero for the Braves going 2-3 with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored, a triple and a stolen base.
