   Johnson          Brown            Ryan        B.Robinson      Palmer

GAME 1:  The O's jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the 3rd when Don Buford hit a 2 run shot off of Ranger starter Charlie Hough.  Oriole starter Jim Palmer was cruising until the top of the 6th when Toby Harrah led off with a triple and scored on a sac fly by Julio Franco.  Pete O'Brien hit a solo shot in the 7th to tie the game at 2 which is where it stood until Davey Johnson hit a solo shot of his own to put the O's up 3-2.  Larry Parrish had a clean one out single off of Palmer to end the young hurler's day.  Greg Olson came on board to grab the save and give the O's a 1-0 lead in the series.

GAME 2:  Baseball is a strange game.  Most pundits would have given Mike Cuellar a huge edge over Kevin Brown.  They just forgot to tell Brown, who went 8 innings and gave up only 2 earned runs.  Meanwhile Cuellar, who did go the distance, gave up 5 runs on 11 hits to take the loss.  Cuellar had a 3-2 lead until he surrendered 2 in the 5th when Buddy Bell walked with one out and Jeff Burroughs hit a tape measure shot with 2 outs for a huge clutch hit.  Both teams exchanged solo runs in the 8th and Jeff Russell closed it out as the Rangers evened the series at 1 apiece.

GAME 3:  The only suspense in this 10-0 laugher surrounded the reasoning behind manager Weiss removing Nolan Ryan after tossing 7 innings of no-hit ball.  Ryan began to tire and his pitch count did hit 118.  Casey Cox pitched the final 2 innings and gave up 2 hits, but preserved the shutout.  Jim Sundberg had 5 RBI's on the day and Frank "the Capital Punisher" Howard went 3 for 4.  After the game Ryan refused to comment on his manager's gaffe, but did say that if he ever got to run a ballclub he would NEVER allow pitch counts to dictate a managerial decision.  Dave McNally was shellacked for 8 runs in just over 5 innings for the O's, who now have their backs up against the wall down 2-1 in this short 5 game set.

GAME 4:  Mike Flanagan and Dick Bosman hooked up in a classic pitcher's duel that had to go 11 innings before it was settled.  By that point both starters were long gone and the bullpen had the responsibility.  Baltimore's pen was up to the task as Dick Hall threw and inning and a third of scoreless ball until the O's took the lead in the top of the 11th when Brooks Robinson doubled home Eddie Murray with 2 outs off of Casey Cox.  Gregg Olson came on to pitch a perfect bottom of the 11th for the save as the series was now tied at 2 apiece.

GAME 5:  The series moved back to Baltimore for the deciding game 5.  Once again O's manager Andy Weinrib went with Jim Palmer, his game 1 winner.  Joe Coleman was chosen to represent the Rangers.  Coleman, better know for his tough luck pitching during the franchise's "salad days" in Washington was not up to the task.  Baltimore struck for 2 runs in the 2nd with 2 out.  Frank Robinson doubled off the wall in right center.  Coleman beaned Don Baylor, who has a habit of "taking one for the team".  Backstop Gus Triandos crushed a 2-1 offering off of the wall in center to double home both runners, who were in motion.  The Rangers cut the lead to 1 when Julio Franco doubled home Ruben "High" Sierra in the top of the 3rd.  Baltimore would answer right back in the bottom of the frame, when John Wesley "Boog" Powell hit a shot deep into the right field bleachers.  With the score 3-1, Palmer got himself into trouble in the top of the 5th when Sierra led off with a walk and Geno Petralli lined a clean single to right.  Mickey Rivers bunted both runners up a base and Sierra scored on Franco's routine grounder to short, which was the first out of the inning.  Buddy Bell singled home Petralli to tie the game, but Bosman could not maintain the status quo.  Brooks Robinson, again a hero with his bat, singled home Boog Powell with 2 out to put the O's back up by 1, which is how it would remain.  Palmer, who is not in the Hall of Fame by accident, locked the game down with 4 scoreless innings in defense of his 1 run lead.  Texas never threatened.  Baltimore held on to defeat the underdog Rangers, 3 games to 2 in this classic opening round series.
