Angels in the Outfield and Soaring to Heaven

Down 2 games to none and losing Game 3 by 3 runs heading to the bottom of the 8th inning, the California Angels staged one of the most remarkable comebacks in KOD history.

Game 1 - Oakland Coliseum - Oakland 6, California 4
Behind Catfish Hunter, A's opened up a 6-1 by the end of the 3rd. Dick Green and Jose Canseco both went deep off losing pitcher Dean Chance, who was shelled for 10 hits and lasted only 2.1 innings. Angels pulled within 2 after solo HRs by Jack Howell, Bobby Grich and Jim Fregosi. They managed to load the bases with 2 outs in the 9th. But
Dennis Eckersley got Devon White to line out to earn the save and preserve the win for Hunter.

Game 2 - Oakland Coliseum- Oakland 8, California 2
Vida Blue threw a 4-hit complete game, and the Athletics tagged Angels starter Nolan for 7 runs (6 earned) in 5 innings, as the A's cruised to an easy 8-2 win. Mark McGwire homered for Oakland, and Rick Reichardt ht a meaningless 2-run HR in the top of the ninth to spoil the shutout. The series moved to Anaheim with Oakland up 2-0.

Game 3 - Anaheim Stadium- California 10, Oakland 8
For the third straight game the Angels starter failed to give up less than 6 runs by the 5th inning. Frank Tanana couldn't make it out of the 5th. This time it was A's catcher Terry Steinbach who did the damage with two 3-run HRs. California's
Reggie Jackson hit a 3-run HR off Oakland starter Dave Stewart to keep it close. But with the Athletics up by 3 runs going into the bottom of the 8th, this game and series looked to be over. But with the fans leaving for the exits, the Halos bats suddenly came alive. By the time the dust settled, they had scored 6 runs to take a 10-7 lead. Jose Canseco's solo shot off Brian Harvey in the 9th made it a 2-run game. But Harvey finished it off to pick up the save and give the win in relief to Andy Messersmith.

Game 4 - Anaheim Stadium - California 6, Oakland 1
Mike Witt finally gave the Angels a quality start, with 7 innings of 4 hit, no run, 8 Ks pitching.
Jack Howell's 3-run bomb in the 7th off Athletics' starter Blue Moon Odom broke the game open, as California evened the series and forced a final game back in Oakland

Game 5 - Oakland Coliseum - California 5, Oakland 1
Redemption was at hand as the Angels handed the ball to Game 1 starter
Dean Chance, while the Athletics answered with Game 2 ace Vida Blue. Dean responded to his second chance, holding Oakland to 3 hits and 1 run in 5.2 innings. Angels chipped away at Blue with 2 runs in the 3rd, and single runs in the 4th, 6th and 8th innings. The final run was a most unlikely solo shot by slap hitter Albie Pearson. Angels relievers Rudy May, Kirk McCaskill and Brian Harvey pitched 3.1 innings of 3 hit, no run ball, as Oakland was held to only 6 singles the entire game. The stunned Oakland fans could only watch in disbelief as California took the series 3-2.

Notes: The California bullpen gave up a mere 2 earned runs in 18.2 innings for the entire series. Angels big bats Don Baylor, Rod Carew, Doug DeCinces, Brian Downing, Reggie Jackson and Wally Joyner were a combined 13 for 70 (.186) with 5 RBIs. Meanwhile, unlikely heros Sandy Alomar, Juan Beniquez, Jack Howell, Albie Paerson and Rick Reichardt were a combined 16-42 (.381) with 16 RBIs  --
