Sox beat Sawx

Not only did this series go the distance...it took 2 extra frames in the final game to finally decide a winner.  Steve Tate managed the Chisox for games 1/2 & Justin Ryan had them for the final 3.

Game 1 - Fenway Park - White Sox 8, Red Sox 5
Red Sox nation watched Luis Tiant throw 3 scoreless innings, then boom, he rubbed up a blister and trouble started. Jorge Orta and
Harold Baines hit back to back jacks in the 4th to tie the game at 2. Tiant should have left then, but the tough as nails Cuban tried to play through it. He got out of the 4th without any further damage, but had to come out in the 5th after allowing Luis Aparicio and Lance Johnson to reach base with consecutive singles. Reliever Bill Lee was a victim of a Bobby Doerr error and 2 run double by Lamar Johnson, which put the Pale Hose up 4-2. It stayed that way until the 7th when the home team erupted for 3 runs off of White Sox starter Gary Peters. The inning started off innocent enough with a walk to the dangerous Ted Williams. Doerr and Vern Stephens grounded out, but George "the Boomer" Scott worked out a walk and a man who is not strange to late inning / pressure situation heroics (Carlton Fisk) stepped to the plate. Remincient of his game 6 homer in the '75 series, Fisk hit one deep into the night over the Green Monstah to make it 5-4 Sawx. Wilbur Wood and Hoyt Wilhelm came onboard for Chicago and held Boston scoreless. Sparky Lyle and Dick Radatz were tasked with doing the same thing in the 9th to seal the victory for Red Sox Nation. Both combined to record 3 outs in the 9th, but not before yielding 4 runs to Chicago and the game. The big blow was Baines' second homer of the day. This one being a grand slam that turned a 1 run deficit into a 3 run lead. Dick Radatz served this one up to Baines as the Chisox took a 1-0 lead in the series.

Game 2 - Fenway Park - Red Sox 6, White Sox 3
Boston pinned it's hopes on "the Rocket",
Roger Clemens to even this one up. The Chisox drew first blood as Baines continued his hot hitting with an RBI single in the first scoring Nellie Fox. Boston took the lead in the bottom of the second when Freddy Lynn hit a sac fly to center to score Bobby Doerr. Vern Stephens scored moments earlier on a wild pitch by Chisox starter Joe Horlen, who did not have his best stuff. The 6th innings saw Floyd Robinson double home Orta and Greg Walker with 2 outs to tie it at 3 apiece. Boston answered right back with 3 of their own in the bottom of the 6th to go up by 3. Boston was able to do all this with another 2 out rally. After Stephens grounded weakly to short and Doerr fanned. Back to back singles by Lynn, Rich Gedman and Wade Boggs got it started. A double by Pete Runnels knocked in Gedman (Lynn scored on Boggs' hit). Ted Williams was given an intentional pass. Dewey Evans walked on 5 pitches to force in the 3rd run of the inning. Clemens' work was done after 8 innings and Sparky Lyle and Ellis Kinder came on to finish off the 9th to tie the series at 1 each.

Game 3 - Comiskey Park - Red Sox 5, White Sox 3
Lefty Mel Parnell went the distance for Boston. He gave up 1 run over the first 7 innings of work and 2 window dressing runs in the 8th to make it close. Jack McDowell was barely effective for the Pale Hose in 7 innings of work that yielded 5 runs for Boston.
Carlton Fisk came through again with a 3 run blast, his 3rd HR of the series, in the 7th inning to make it 5-1. Not to be outdone by his Boston mirror image...Fisk doubled home 2 runs for the White Sox in the following inning ! Guess that's why he's in Cooperstown !

Game 4 - Comiskey Park - White Sox 9, Red Sox 8
Down 2 games to 1 the Chisox had their back up against the wall. After the Bosox scored first on a Jackie Jensen single, the Pale Hose exploded for 5 unearned runs off of Frank Sullivan in the bottom of the 2nd. Whatever could go wrong...did go wrong as Sullivan was the hard luck recipient of his team's malaprops in the field. Bobby Doerr was the culprit with a major throwing error with 2 out. The floodgates immediately opened. Orta had a 2 run single and Ozzie Guillen had a 2 run triple. Chicago added a solo run in the 4th and the 7th and 2 in the 6th to hand starter Tommy John an comfortable 9-1 lead. John was cruising until the top of the 8th when Boston chased him and things started getting interesting. Jim Rice singled home Vern Stephens and moved Rico Petrocelli to third. John was now replaced by Lamar Hoyt who served up a 3 run shot to George Scott before retiring the next 3 batters. The score was now 9-5 with 3 outs to go. Hoyt returned to the mound in the top of the 9th and could not get another batter out. Jackie Jensen led off with a single. Stephens walked and Rico Petrocelli launched a 3 run shot to put Boston within a run. The homer came off of Wilhelm, who replaced Hoyt after Jensen's single.
Hoyt Wilhelm regained his composure after yielding a single to Jim Rice. He struck out Scott, got Doerr to pop to second and then induced pinch hitter Wade Boggs to fly out to left to end it. The series was now tied, but the South Siders came perilously close to blowing this one, which should have been a laugher.

Game 5 - Fenway Park - White Sox 7, Red Sox 4 (11 inn)
Roger Clemens and Floyd Peters were charged with the decisive game 7. Clemens cracked first when he gave up 2 runs in the first to the Pale Hose. Carlos May lined a 1 out single to center, but Minnie Minoso fanned for the second out. Harold Baines stepped up and wrapped a liner just around the "Pesky Pole" for a 2 run homer, his 3rd of the series. Chicago scored 2 more in the 4th when Baines led off with a walk and Robin Ventura hit a towering shot into the right center field bullpen to make it 4-0. Clemens was having one of those feast or famine type days. He would work into the 8th inning and yield 4 runs, all on HR's, yet he also had 11 strikeouts. Peters had a shutout going until the 5th when he yielded a solo shot to Petrocelli. Going into the home half of the 8th Peters was up 4-1 and it looked like the game and the series was over. Dewey Evans led off with a bloop single to right on a pitch that totally fooled him. Scott fanned on 4 pitches for the first out and Dom DiMaggio followed with a rope to center to put runners on 1st and second with 1 out. Vern Stephens was tapped to pinch hit for Boggs and he hit a bullet right into Ventura's glove at third for out number 2.
Bobby Doerr stepped up and immediately fell into the hole at 0-2. You could see the fans heading for the exits in disgust, but Peters threw one right down the middle and Doerr caught it good and deposited it into the screen up top the Monstah to tie the game at 4. Unbelievable ! Just like that the White Sox went from being 4 outs away from shutting to door to a tie game. The decisive game 5 would now go into extra innings as these two evenly matched teams could not seem to get away from each other. By this time both Peters and Clemens had hit the showers. Bill Lee and Bobby Thigpen were now toting the hill. Thigpen was wonderful allowing just 1 hit over his 3+ innings of work. Lee would also allow just 1 hit, but fate would not be so kind to him. In the top of the 11th Chet Lemon was walked on 4 pitches by Lee. He would move to second on Ozzie Guillen's single. "Little Luis" Aparicio bunted both runners into scoring position. Carlos May was given an intentional pass to load the bases and create a force everywhere. Ellis Kinder, a righty, was summoned from the bullpen to face Minnie Minoso. With the infield playing back for a chance to get an inning ending DP Minoso crossed them up by hitting a slow roller to first, which Scott had no choice but to toss to Kinder at first for the second out of the inning. On that play Lemon scored the go ahead run to make it 5-4. With 2 out Harold Baines stepped to the plate with a chance to break the game open. On a 1-0 count he hit a bouncer to Petrocelli, who proceeded to air mail the ball into the stands, which allowed Guillen and May to score. The dye was now cast. Boston was down by 3 with 3 outs to go. Vern Stephens led off the home half of the 11th with a single that went through the hole. Could there be life ? Not for Bobby Doerr who popped to short for out number 1. Boston went to the bench and Yaz was the answer. Could the guy who supplied so many miracles in the summer of '67 create another one ? Unfortunately for Red Sox nation, the answer was no. Yaz hit a grounder right to Chisox first baseman Floyd Robinson, who turned it into a inning/game/series ending 3-6-3 DP.
