The Hunt for Red October

A quick 3 game sweep gets the Big Red Machine that much closer to October.

Game 1 - Crosley Field - Reds 6, Pirates 3
This contest was knotted at 2 until the Reds unloaded for 4 runs off of Pirate starter Steve Blass, in the bottom of the 6th. Frank Robinson led off the inning and took one in the ribs for the team. George Foster singled and Ken Griffey Sr. tripled both home. Vada Pinson doubled home Griff and "Charlie Hustle" (Pete Rose) doubled home Pinson.
Tom Seaver got the start for Cincy and gave up only 2 runs in 7 1/3 innings of work. Pedro Borbon finished the game out and yielded a meaningless run in the 8th.

Game 2 - Crosley Field- Reds 8, Pirates 3
Both starters in this game were gone before the 5th inning ended. Don Gullett left the game in the 2nd due to arm trouble. Doug Drabek left due to ineffectiveness. In less than 5 innings of work Drabek would yield 7 runs to the Big Red Machine. Cincy was bailed out by it's pen in this one. Norm Charlton threw 3+ innings and gave up only 2, but the real story was
Clay Carroll going 4+ and giving up no runs to the explosive Lumber Company. Ralph Kiner, who has grown used to losing in Pittsburgh, did hit a solo shot and went 2 for 3. Pete Rose banged out 4 hits and had 2 RBI. George Foster was 3 for 3 with 3 RBI's to pace Cincy's offense.

Game 3 - Forbes Field- Reds 11, Pirates 7
For the second game in a row both starters were gone before the 5th ended. This time neither made it to the 5th. Both Jose Rijo and John Candelaria were lit up like the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. Rijo yielded 7 runs in 4 innings and The "Candy Man" allowed 9. Again this would come down to bullpen work and the Reds had the better of the 2 pens. Cincy's combination of Borbon, Johnny Franco and Rob Dibble pitched a combined 5 scoreless innings. Kent Tekulve was spotless in 2 innings of work for the Bucs, but Dave Giusti allowed 2 runs in the 8th to allow Cincy to increase their lead to 4 and that spelt doom.
Pete Rose again was the hitting star, going 3 for 5 with 6 RBI's and his second homer of the series. Willie Stargell did hit a grand slam in the 5th to chase Rijo from the hill.
