GAME 1 [Shea Stadium] - Cubs 6, Mets 4
The Shea crowd anticipated a great pitcher's duel between "The Franchise Tom Seaver and "The Professor" Greg Maddux.  Sadly for the Flushing faithful Seaver was not up to his end of the bargain.  Tom Terrific was not able to make it out of the 4th inning as the Cubbies touched him for 5 earned runs.  New York took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Mookie Wilson led off with a triple and scored on a routine ground out by Wally Backman.  The Cubs answered right back with 3 in the second off of Seaver.  The Hawk,
Andre Dawson led off with a homer and Jose Cardenal singled home Ron Santo and Ryne Sandberg with 2 out.  Chicago would strike again for 2 more in the 3rd when Dawson hit his 2nd homer of the day (a 2 run shot), to make it 5-1.  Seaver was finally yanked in the 4th after yielding a leadoff single to Rick Monday and a 1 out double to Cardenal to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.  Ray Sadecki came on board in relief and yielded only 1 run over the next 5 2/3 innings to keep the Amazin's in it.  New York closed the gap to 6-4 with 3 big runs in the 8th. Maddux looked to be locked in even after Ernie Banks booted Gary Carter's routine leadoff grounder.  Maddux began to crack when Wilson single to put runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out.  Felix Millian came on to pinch hitter for Backman and promptly doubled home "The Kid" and moved Wilson up to 3rd.  Maddux was done for the day and Lee Smith came aboard to stop the bleeding. Smith got Kevin McReynolds to bounce back to the box as Wilson scored easily from 3rd.  Keith Hernandez served up a double to left to plate Millan, but the Mets could not continue the scoring as Darryl Strawberry earned the golden sombrero with his 4th strike out of the day and Lee Mazzilli grounded out weakly to Banks to end the inning.  Bruce Sutter came on in the 9th to close it out.  Pinch hitter Cleon Jones singled to right, but HoJo K'd, Kranepool flew out to center and for the final out Wilson bounced weakly to Ryno.

GAME 2 [Shea Stadium] - Mets 9, Cubs 5
Not wanting to go down 0-2 in their home park the Metsies had their proverbial "backs against the wall".  To make matters worse, Chicago had HOF'er Fergie Jenkins on the hill.  New York countered with David Cone, a man known for battling.  Cone was in trouble early and often.  After 3 innings of play the Cubs were up 4-0 and poised to land the knockout blow.  Cone began to settle down and
Kevin McReynolds hit a solo shot in the 4th to give the fans some reason for hope.  Then in the 5th it happened.  The Mets erupted for 6 runs off of a stunned Jenkins.  Mookie Wilson's 3 run homer and McReynold's 2 run shot, his second of the day, put New York in the lead for good.  Tug McGraw came on in the 8th to earn a well deserved 2 inning save as the Mets evened the series at 1 apiece.

GAME 3 [Wrigley Field] - Cubs 8, Mets 4
The series moved to the "Friendly Confines" of Wrigley Field.  New York had the momentum from their huge win in Game 2, plus a decided advantage on the hill with Cy Young winner "Doc" Gooden going against journeyman lefty Dick Ellsworth.  Right from the start Chicago was in trouble.  Ellsworth threw 28 pitches in the first, recorded 2 outs and rubbed up a huge blister and was gone.  His replacement Kenny Holltzman went 5 2/3 innings, but the Mets were able to tap him for 4 runs, which they scored oddly in 4 consecutive innings (2-5).  Gooden was cruising.  After 6 innings he had a nice little shutout going and seemed to be in total control, but then came the fateful 7th .  Chicago erupted for 8 big runs and knocked both Gooden and reliever Jesse Orosco from the hill.  Skip Lockwood came on and yielded 3 runs himself before the damage was done.  The big blow was a grand slam by "Mr Cub" himself,
Ernie Banks, who's pride was severely challenged when manger Justin Ryan intentionally walked Bill Buckner to face #14.  Lost in the shuffle was Warren Hacker's 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, which earned him the right to record the win.  The Cubbies were now up 2 games to 1.

GAME 4 [Wrigley Field] - Mets 4, Cubs 1
Tom Seaver started this game, but with NY's back up against the wall plus his poor game 1 performance, he was going to be on a tight leash.  After yielding a leadoff homer to Ryne Sandberg, Seaver go a visit from his manager.  Words ensued and the next thing you know "The Franchise" was yanked from the game and
Jon Matlack came trotting in from the pen.  Matlack authored one of those virtuoso performances that only Hollywood could script.  Coming in cold from the pen Matlack was able to battle through both the rain (1 hr delay) and the formidible Cub line up to go the distance and author one of the strangest no-hitters in baseball history.  Matlack, who holds the career mark for best ERA for a starter at Shea, took his magic on the road and oh what a magical day it was.  When the Mets scored 3 runs in the 5th the game was virtually a lock.  Bill Hands, who started for the Cubbies, was gone after 6 innings of 4 run work.  Rick Sutcliffe came on and threw 3 scoreless innings in relief, but his performance was totally overshadowed by New York's fine lefty Matlack.

GAME 5 [Shea Stadium] - Cubs 2, Mets 1
The decisive game 5 would be played in Flushing and New York seemed to have all of the momentum on its side.  Cub hitters were cold...in fact, stone cold.  The Mets decided to ride the luck of the lefties, and tapped Jerry Koosman to start the game.  The Cubs went back to
Fergie Jenkins in hopes that he'd find his pedigre and not have a repeat of his game 2 shellacking.  Jenkins was outstanding.  Riding a string of 6 shutout innings the big right from Canada made one mistake all afternoon...a solo shot by HoJo to lead off the 7th.  That shot cut the Cub lead to 2-1.  The Cubs were able to get 2 runs off of Koosman in the 3rd when Ron Santo singled home Ryne Sandberg and Billy Williams launched a sac fly to right to score Jose Cardenal.  Koosman battled all afternoon.  Inning after inning he was in trouble, but the tough as nails lefty battled through it all.  Koosman was lifted in the 7th in favor of Sid Fernandez, who had no control whatsoever.  Sid "the squid" walked Hank Sauer and Andrew Dawson to load the bases with nobody out.  Chicago was threatening to blow the game wide open.  Manager Ryan thought quick and brought the mentally tough David Cone on board in hopes of limiting the damage.  Cone didn't just limit the damage, he prevented it.  Cone fanned Jody Davis on 4 pitchers, got Mark Grace to pop weakly to 2nd and escaped completely when Sandberg lined to Buddy Harrelson at short.  New York had the momentum and 6 outs to tie the game.  Unfortunately the game of baseball has momentum killers like Bruce Sutter, who came on in the 8th and got the final 6 outs to close out the game and the series, which went the distance.
