Motown Madness

This series had everything a fan could want, including a game 5 that went down to the wire.  In the end the Tigers had a bit more offense than the Indians.

Game 1 - Tiger Stadium - Tigers 8, Indians 6
The expected pitcher's duel between HOF'er Early Wynn and World Series MVP Mickey Lolich never materialized. Wynn was tagged for 15 hits and 8 runs in almost 8 innings worth of work. Lolich was modestly better going 7+ and yielding 6. With the score tied at 6 the Tigers went ahead with a solo run in the 7th and added an insurance run in the 8th.
Lance Parrish singled home Charlie Maxwell in the 7th and with 2 outs Ray Boone doubled George Kell home. Terry Fox and Willie Hernandez combined to set the Indians down in the top of the 9th to close out the victory. Norm Cash had a homer, a double and 3 RBI's to pace Detroit's offense. Larry Doby hit 2 homers himself in a losing cause.

Game 2 - Tiger Stadium- Indians 9, Tigers 7
For the better part of this game HOF'er Bob Lemon and Cy Young award winner Denny McLain held these potent offenses in check. Entering the 9th the game was knotted at 3. Cleveland unleashed a 6 run barrage against the ineffective Tiger pen. First John Hiller yielded a 3 spot, then Fred Gladding threw more kerosene on the fire to the tune of 3 more.
Ron Hassey, who hit a homer in his previous AB had a big 2 run double to score Joe Carter and Toby Harrah to get the ball rolling in the 9th. Surprisingly Lemon came out to start the 9th even though he was obviously starting to tire. Harvey Kuenn popped out for the first out, and all looked to be routine, but Lemon just couldn't close the door. After yielding 3 consecutive singles to Boone, Willie Horton and Bill Freehan, Lemon was gone. Doug Jones came on to fan Ron LeFlore for out #2, but after George Kell singled home a run he too was gone. Jim Kern was summoned from the pen and he served up a RBI single to Al Kaline. Running out of options, the Indians were now up by only 2 runs with the go ahead run at the plate in the form of Al Groth. "Rabbit Ears" Don Mossi was able to come in and get Groth to ground back to the originator to end this wild offensive thriller.

Game 3 - Cleveland Municipal Stadium - Tigers 9, Indians 5
Jack Morris did what Jack Morris does. He pitched well enough to win and just slightly better than his opposing number. Morris scattered 10 hits over 7 innings and was in and out of trouble, but made the key pitches when he had to. In this humble reporter's opinion, I think it is a travesty that Mr. Morris is not enshrined in Cooperstown. The man is a "money" pitcher ! His opposing number "Sudden" Sam McDowell was not too shabby himself. Granted he spotted the Tigers a 3 run lead after 3 innings, but he "righted" the ship and began cruising as the Indian offense began to catch up to Morris. McDowell's undoing would be the top of the 8th where Detroit banged out 6 runs and took a commanding 9-4 lead that Cleveland could not overcome. Alan Trammel led off the inning and reached first when Luke Easter booted a routine hop grounder. McDowell lost his composure and balked "Tram" over to 2nd. Kaline, as clutch as ever, singled home Tram to tie the game at 4. Horton singled and Boone walked to load the bases. McDowell was replaced by Jim Kern, who once again was putrid. Pinch hitter Harvey Kuenn singled home Kaline and Horton and Lou Whitaker hit a 3 run blast to put it out of reach. Mike Henneman and Terry Fox struggled out of the pen, but they got the job done and closed out the game to give the Tigers a 2-1 series lead.

Game 4 - Cleveland Municipal Stadium - Indians 5, Tigers 3
This HOF pitching match up between Jim "the congressman" Bunning and Bob "Rapid Robert" Feller did not disappoint one bit. Feller was the first one to crack, when he yielded a 2 run/2 out homer to Norm Cash in the top of the 6th. Bunning had himself a shutout going until the 7th when he too yielded 2 runs. Rocky Colavito led off the inning with a single and with a perfectly executed hit and run play Tito Francona doubled him home. With 2 outs banjo hitting
Duane Kuiper singled home Francona to tie it. Both Feller and Bunning would be gone from the game as the 8th inning began. Narleski took over for Feller and was able to get out of the 7th. He would not be so lucky in the 8th when Detroit's favorite hero AL Kaline launched an opposite field line drive homer to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead with 6 outs to go. Detroit pinned their hopes on their pen to close out the game and the series. John Hiller, who got 2 outs in the 7th in relief of Bunning could only retire 1 batter in the 8th before yielding a single to Larry Doby. Fred Gladding came on to fan Al Rosen for the second out as Doby snuck in to steal second. Gladding had Colavito down with an 0-2 count, but let the rifle armed right fielder battle back to work out a walk. Detroit manager Steve Tate had enough of Gladding and called on Willie Hernandez to get Tito Francona out to end the inning and protect the lead. Cleveland countered Detroit's move by bringing in Julio Franco to pinch hit for the lefty Francona. Franco with his trademark slicing inside out screen lined a ball that just cleared the right field fence for a 3 run shot to put the Tribe up 5-3. Not wanting to risk another bullpen meltdown the Indians stuck with Narleski who easily got the first 2 outs in the 9th before pinch hitter Harvey Kuenn singled. No need to panic as pinch hitter Willie Horton lined out Andy Thornton at first as the series was now tied at 2 apiece.

Game 5 - Tiger Stadium - Tigers 5, Indians 3
Nothing more pressure packed than a game 5 situation. Both managers went with clutch performers to hold the opposing offenses at bay. Cleveland went with Luis Tiant, a man who knows no fear. A man who left his native Cuba for the uncertainty of life in the US far away from his family. Tiant still harbors ill will toward the Tigers, because Denny McLain "stole" his Cy Young award from him in 1968. The Tigers countered with Mickey Lolich, an inning (and donut) eating machine, that beat a dynasty Cardinal team 3 times in the '68 series. If it was at all possible the tension got even tighter in the bottom of the second when Lolich came down wrong off the mound and twisted his knee. Having set down the first 5 batters that he faced and just finding his groove Lolich was done for the day. Detroit was forced to go to the pen and out came cult hero
Mark "The Bird" Fidrych. Would this be the vintage Fidrych who captivated the Motor City in the summer of '76 or the oft injured flop of the next few years. It wouldn't take long to see that both Tiant and Fidrych were going to be up to the task. With no score after 4 the Indians struck first when they loaded the bases off of "The Bird" with 1 out in the 5th. Toby Harrah hit a soft grounder to first that Norm Cash took unassisted to plate Woodie Held. The next batter, Bobby Avila, grounded weakly to Whitaker at second to end the inning. Fidrych was able to hold of the Indians and not let them have the big inning. Cash led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo shot to tie the game back up. Fidrych was again in trouble in the 6th, but with 2 out and 2 on jammed Held who hit a dribbler to Trammell who stepped on second for the inning ending force. Tiant was his own worst enemy in the 6th when he walked the first 2 batters (Vic Wertz & Harvey Kuenn). A passed ball charged to catcher Mike Romano allowed the runners to advance to 2nd and 3rd. Pinch hitter Dick McAuliffe lifted a sac fly to right to score Wertz and make it 2-1 Tigers. Charlie Maxwell hit the overhang in right center for a solo shot to make it 3-1. Just when it looked like the Indians were about to fold their teepee pinch hitter Tito Francona singled to lead off the 8th off of Fidrych, who by now was stretched to his limits. John Hiller came on for the lefty / lefty match up and fanned Lary Doby, who had been "killing" the Tigers all series. Al Rosen walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd and Dale Mitchell singled to score Francona. Woodie Held then singled to score Rosen and tie the game at 3. Fidrych, who had pitched brilliantly in relief of the injured Lolich, was now going to lose his opportunity for the win. Terry Fox came on board to close the inning out, but the game was now tied. Tiant started the 8th, but was unable to finish it. After getting Freehan to ground out to short he served up a two bagger to Kuenn. Willie Horton singled Kuenn home to give Detroit a 1 run led. Lou Whitaker singled home Horton for an insurance run. Don Mossi replaced Tiant and no further damage occurred. Fox set the first 2 Indians down, but after yielding a single to Francona was replaced by Hank Aguirre who fanned Doby for the final out as the Tigers win this exciting series that went down to the wire.
