GAME 1 [Busch Memorial Stadium] – Dodgers 4, Cardinals 3

The anticipation of a Koufax/Gibson matchup had everyone talking in America’s most loyal “baseball town”.  This marquee matchup was destined to not live up to it’s billing.  Koufax was the first to “break”, as he yielded 3 runs over the first 3 innings.  In reality Sandy was bending, but not breaking as the 1st inning would be evidence.  The Cards had the great lefty on the ropes.  Lou Brock led off with a single and easily stole 2nd.  Curt Flood took one in the ribs to put runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out.  Stan “the man” Musial single to load them up.  Koufax blew away Ken Boyer for the first out.  Joe Torre singled home Brock for the 1st run of the game, but Bill White fanned and Ted Simmons popped to Junior Gilliam to end the inning.  The Cards had him (Koufax) on the ropes, but they led him get away.  Boyer exacted some revenge when he hit a 2 run homer in the third to put the Redbirds up 3-0.  Gibson had his lead and for the first 5 innings he was in total command.  Then in the 6th it all unraveled.  Reggie Smith led off with a line double off the right field wall.  Maury Wills and Gilliam both popped out and just like that it looked to be another one of those innings where Gibson would dominate.  Jackie Robinson stepped to the plate.  Here is a man who is unphazed by any sort of ball game pressure.  Fighting back from an 0-2 count Robinson served up a single to right center to score Smith for the Dodgers first run of the game.  Gibson decided to challenge the next batter, The Duke (Snider) of Flatbush.  The Duke can turn around anyone’s fastball and that is exactly what he did by launching Gibson’s 2-1 offering deep into the 2nd deck in rightfield to tie the game at 3.  St. Louis was in trouble…BIG TROUBLE.  After the let Koufax off the hook, the Brooklyn born former “Bonus Baby” began dominating.  6 consecutive scoreless innings from the 4th to the finish spelt doom for the Cards.  A Duke Snider solo shot with 2 outs in the 8th put the Dodgers in front for good as Koufax did not allow the final 20 batters he faced to reach base.

GAME 2 [Busch Memorial Stadium] – Dodgers 1, Cardinals 0

The low scoring pitcher’s duel that everyone was expecting in the opener was delivered in game 2.  Don Drysdale and Larry Jackson hooked up in one of those pitching classics that keep you on the edge of your seat until the final out.  The lone run of the game was scored in the top of the 3rd when Bill Cox singled home Carl Furillo.  St. Louis’ best chance to score came in the 4th when they had 2 on with 2 out, but Red Schoendienst grounded into a 6-4 force play to end it.  The Cards would only have 1 baserunner (Enos Slaughter) after that.  The Dodgers took a commanding 2-0 lead in the best of 5 series.

GAME 3 [Ebbets Field] – Cardinals 9, Dodgers 1

The final score is not indicative of how close this contest really was.  The Dodgers decided to tap lefty Preacher Roe for the closer.  St. Louis went with fan favorite Bob Forsch.  The Cards drew first blood when Ted Simmons singled home George Hendrick with 2 outs. In the 2nd.  The Dodgers answered right back, when the “Wizard of Oz” (Ozzie Smith) uncharacteristically booted a grounder, which allowed the Dodgers to laod the bases.  Car Furillo walked to force in a run, but Maury Wills was caught looking at strike 3 to end the Dodgers chances.  Forsch would yield just that 1 unearned run before exiting after 6 innings of stellar work.  The Cards would score 2 runs in the 6th to take a 3-1 lead before Forsch’s exit.  Simmons again came through with a 2 out single to knock in 2 runs (Musial and Boyer).  The Cards would blow the game wide open with 6 runs in the 8th as the Dodgers were victimized by poor fielding, poor pitching and injuries.  Roe, who was pitching well left with soreness in his shoulder and was replaced by Don Newcombe who gave up all 6 runs.  “Newk” was victimized by a dropped sure out by Furillo in right and then by a big 3 run homer by Stan “the man”.  Ernie Broglio pitched the final 3 innings for the Cards to notch the save and stave of elimination.

GAME 4 [Ebbets Field] –Dodgers 7, Cardinals 1

Don Sutton was hearing the rumblings.  You know, those stories…”he was a good pitcher, but not great”…”he collected stats, but was never the best guy on his team”.  That’s the kind of stuff that can inspire a guy.  Sutton took that bulletin board material and used it to the tune of 8 1/3 innings of work and only 1 earned run vs a lineup of .300 hitter.  He managed to scatter 7 hits during that span and probably could have finished the game.  Meanwhile his opponent, Joaquin Andujar was busy punching water coolers after he was lifted in the 4th inning when the Dodgers tagged him for 4 runs to make it 5-0.  St. Louis’ pen was solid, but the dam was already opened.  Every Dodgers starter, with the exception of Jackie Robinson had at least 1 hit.  Gil Hodges hit a big 3 run blast and Willie Davis was 3-5.  Lou Brock and Stan Musial both banged out 2 hits in a losing cause as the Dodgers took the series in 4.
