GAME 1 [Memorial Stadium]:  Don't let he score fool you...This wasn't Colts vs Rams circa 1975. There was more offense here than in a Harry Reid comment. The normally stingy Mike Cuellar gave up 8 runs in 6 innings. In his prime he might surrender that in 6 games. At one point Baltimore had a 9-3 lead, but the Halos scored 11 runs over the final 3 innings to put this one in the books. Juan Beniquez and Mickey Rivers both hd 3 hit games and Brian Downing had 4 RBI's to go along with his double and homer.

GAME 2 [Memorial Stadium]:  Through 3 innings Jim Palmer and Frank Tanana were both hooked up in a scoreless duel. The O's used the longball to post 3 runs in the 4th and never looked back. DH Boog Powell led off with a single and Eddie Murray followed that up with a 2 run shot. Not to be outdone, Frank Robinson blasted a solo shot of his own. Up until that point Tanana was looking dominant. He struck out the side in the 2nd and fanned the first batter in the 3rd. In fact he returned to form by fanning the final two batters in the 4th. All in all Tanana fanned 9 in 7 innings of work, until he left the game with a shoulder injury. As good as his performance was, Tanana was outdone by the great Jim Palmer who gave up only 1 run on 6 hits in a complete game performance that required less than 100 pitches. Jim Fregosi singled home Albie Pearson on a routine ground out to Bobby Grich at second.

GAME 3 [Anaheim Stadium]:  Dave McNally kept the Angel batsmen offstride all game by scattering 7 hits in just over 7 innings of work. Dean Chance couldn't fool anyone as the O's bats heated up to the tune of 9 runs scored. Chance gave up 5 in 5 innings of work. Geoff Zahn his successor was just as awful (4 runs in 4 inn). Cal Ripken went 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored. Frank Robinson was 2-4 with 3 RBI and a homer. Tablesetters Rivers and Beniquez were on base 4 times, but the Angel run producers could only plate them once.

GAME 4 [Anaheim Stadium]:  With their backs up against the wall the Angels put their season firmly on the shoulders of Mike Witt, who gave them 7 solid innings (2 runs) before yielding to a bullpen by committee, which did not allow any runs over the final 2 frames. Mike Flanagan went the distance for the O's, but he was less than spectacular allowing 5 runs on 11 hits. The Halos scored first with 2 in the third. Doug DeCinces doubled home Dave Chalk and 2 batters later Albie Pearson singled him home. The score stood that way until Cali stroke for 2 more in the 7th as DeCinces hit a monster 2 run shot with 2 outs. Mickey Rivers singled home Pearson, who led off the 8th with a double, to supply an additional insurance run. The O's threatened and scored 2 in the 8th, but Kirk McCaskill was able to get Brooks Robinson to ground into an inning ending DP to cut the rally short.

GAME 5 [Memorial Stadium]:  Mike Cuellar vs Nolan Ryan in a do or die game 5...it just doesn't get any better than that does it ? The O's didn't waste any time at all and put the pressure on the Angels by posting a 2 spot in the 3rd. Ryan fanned leadoff man Don Buford, but gave up a single to Ripken and Chris Hoiles followed with an opposite field RBI double. Paul Blair layed down a picture perfect bunt to execute the squeeze play and score Hoiles to make it 2 zip. Brian Downing doubled home the speedy Mickey Rivers with 2 out in the top of the fifth to cut Baltimore's lead in half and make it a 1 run ball game. The O's would answer back in the bottom of the frame when Cal Ripken Jr. singled home Frank Robinson. Paul Blair singled to make it 1st and 3rd and Ryan's day was done. Angel manager Douglas Zaner could not risk going down any further in the game, so he summoned Andy Messersmith from the pen to get Davey Johnson and end the Oriole threat, which he did. Messersmith allowed only 1 hit (a single by Frank Robinson) over the 3+ innings he pitched, but without offensive support he was not going to be able to get the win. The 7th inning looked like it was going to be the time and place for the Angels to get to Cuellar. The lightning fast Rivers lashed a line drive down the left field line that he legged into a double. Beniquez flew out easily to Blair in center. Light hitting Dave Chalk lofted a parachute over the outstretched arms of Davey Johnson to put runners on the corners with 1 out. Downing slammed a shot that Frank Robinson tracked down at the warning track to score Rivers easily on a sac fly. Downing barely missed a homer that would have put the Halos up by 1. DeCinces flew out to Blair and the inning was over. Cuellar settled back down for the final 2 frames and scattered two inconsequential hit. Downing, who barely missed being the hero in the 7th, had a chance to redeem himself, but instead fanned for the final out as the O's won 3-2 in this great 5 game series.
