Pale Hose advance after 20 inning classic

Only 1 game wasn't decided by 1 run in this fantastic series that ended with a 20 inning rain delayed game 4.

Game 1 - Tiger Stadium
Like we've seen so many times before, the great Jack Morris gave up 1 less run than his team scored en-route to victory. Morris and Joe Horlen hooked up in a pitcher's duel that saw 6 scoreless innings until the Pale Hose broke through with 3 in the top of the 7th when Robin Ventura hit a 3 run shot. Detroit cut the deficit to 2 in the bottom of the frame, when Ron LeFlore singled home Charlie Maxwell, who reached first when Carlos May booted a chopper. In the bottom of the 8th the Tigers took the lead for good when Norm Cash hit a 3 run shot with 2 outs. Morris had his lead and shut the door by posting goose eggs for the final 3 frames.

Game 2 - Tiger Stadium
For the second night in a row 1 run was the difference. Chicago attempted to nurse a 5 run lead to the finish line, but starter Gary Peters began to tire. Eddie Fisher was unable to stem the tide and relief ace Hoyt Wilhelm was called in to get the final 2 outs after Alan Trammell launched a 2 run shot to put Motown down by 1. Wilhelm was bending, but he was not breaking. After getting Al Kaline to pop up he allowed clean singles to Harvey Kuenn and George Kell before getting Bill Freehan to foul out to Minnie Minoso in left for the final out. Alan Trammell's 4 RBI day went for naught. Robin Ventura again had the hot lumber going 3 for 5 with 3 RBI's, a double and a homer.

Game 3 - Comiskey Park
Finally a game that wasn't close. Wilbur Wood tossed a complete game 4 hitter. Detroit's lone run came in the 4th when George Kell singled home Kaline. Lamar Johnson paced the South Side offence going 2 for 4 with 3 RBI's and a homer.

Game 4 - Comiskey Park
Mere words could not justify just how great this contest was. It took 20 innings, a 30 minute rain delay and an awful lot of LOB's before the Chisox were able to close the door and eliminate Detroit. Tommy John and the Pale Hose carried a 2-1 lead into the 9th when Al Kaline reached first on a Nellie Fox error. Kuenn flew out to center with what should have been the second out of the inning. John uncorked a wild pitch, but all seemed to be ok when Kell grounded out to second. Facing the thought of being the final out, Bill Freehan fought off a number of pitches before roping one to center to score Kaline to tie the game. It would stay tied for the next 4 innings when Detroit took a 3-2 lead as Kuenn singled home Kaline who led off with a double. Eddie Fisher, who would go 7 1/3 innings looked to be on the short side of things as John Hiller attempted to close it out. Jim Landis, who entered the game in the 11th as a pinch hitter too a 1 out 2 strike offering from Hiller and launched it over the centerfield wall to again tie the game. It would stay that way until the fateful 20th inning when Terry Fox, in his only inning of work, surrendered 3 consecutive singles with the final one by Carlton Fisk scoring Minnie Minoso and propelling the Chisox into the LCS vs Baltimore.
