'Dem Bums sweep Hapless Cubbies

Cubs go down fighting, but the Boys of Summer were just too strong for the Northsiders.

Game 1 - [Ebbets Field] - Dodgers 3, Cubs 1
Poor Greg Maddux. The "professor" goes out and gives up only 2 runs in 7 innings of work, but still did not stand a chance. That happens quite regularly when your opposing number's name is Sanford Braun, who you all might no better as
Sandy Koufax. Just another day in the office for graduate of Brooklyn's own Lafayette High School. Just your run of the mill complete game 1 hitter. That one hit came in the 4th when Billy Williams fought off a high heater to slice it down the left field line for a homer. If you like suspense, offense or the Cubs, that moment was the time to turn off your TV and sit back and smile. The rest of the day belonged to Koufax who got 3 runs in support of his effort. The Dodgers tied it up in the bottom of the 5th when Pedro Guerrero led off with a single. Maddux fanned John Roseboro and Junior Gilliam grounded out for the second out. Maury Wills worked out a walk and Jackie Robinson singled home Gilliam, who hit into a force play earlier. Koufax was handed a 2-1 lead when his offense scored another solo run in the 6th. Gilliam walked with the bases loaded to force in a run. Bob Rush came on in the 8th for Chicago and gave up a 1 out hit to Guerrero, who caught everyone napping and stole second. Rush uncorked a wild pitch and Maury Wills singled home Guerrero for their 3rd run of the day. Koufax closed out the game in style by fanning Ryne Sandberg and Billy Williams.

Game 2 - [Ebbets Field] - Dodgers 9, Cubs 4
The Cubbies drew first blood when
Ryne Sandberg hit a 1 out solo shot off of Don Drysdale in the top of the 1st. The Dodgers tied it up with a solo run in the 3rd, when Junior Gilliam scored on a Roy Campenella sac fly. Gilliam got to third when Billy Williams made an errant throw on Duke Snider's single. The Dodgers made it 2-1 in the 6th when Gilliam doubled home Tommy Davis. LA/BK busted it open in the 6th when the chased Cub starter Rick Reuschel from the hill with 4 runs. Back to back triples by men named Davis (Willie & Tommy) were responsible for most of the damage and setting what is probably a major league record for Davis'. The Dodgers added 3 more insurance runs, so nobody cared when Drysdale began grooving pitches in the final 2 innings and allowing some back door runs. The Boys of Summer had the Hapless Cubbies on the brink of elimination by going up 2 games to none in this 5 game set.

Game 3 - [Wrigley Field} - Dodgers 6, Cubs 5 (11 innings)
To stave off elimination the Cubs went with HOF'er Fergie Jenkins, who pitched the clincher for them in the opening round. The Dodgers countered with "the Bulldog", Orel Hershiser. Chicago drew firs blood when
Ernie Banks led off the home half of the second with a solo homer. LA/BK jumped all over Jenkins for 3 runs in the 3rd. After Steve Garvey led off with a bunt single, "the Penguin", Ron Cey hit a two run shot. Tommy Davis followed that up with a single and a stolen base. Davis moved over to third on Maury Wills' ground out to second and scored on Steve Sax' suicide squeeze bunt. Ryne Sandberg doubled and Banks singled him home in the bottom of the 4th to make it 3-2. Tommy Davis hit a solo shot to make it 4-2 in the fifth. In the bottom of the frame Billy Williams got a clutch 2 out single to plate Rick Monday to cut the lead to 1. Hank Sauer hit a 2 run shot in the 6th to give the Cubs a 5-4 lead, which hastened Hershiser's departure. The Dodgers tied it up when Tommy Davis hit his second solo homer of the day. The Cubs threatened in the 8th by loading the bases. Both Hershiser and his replacement Don Newcombe could not get out of the jam. Bullpen specialist, Ron Perranoski came in from the pen and fanned pinch hitter Mark Grace to end Chicago's two out rally and not allow a run. Jenkins was still going strong and set the Dodgers down in order in the 9th. Perranoski gave up a 1 out double to Sandberg in the bottom of the 9th, but the Cubs could not capitalize as both Williams and Banks grounded out weakly. Jenkins started the 10th and served up a frozen rope single to Maury Wills, who was bunted over to second by Sax. Duke Snider was given a free pass and Campy flew out to Monday in center for the 2nd out. The man of steel, Gil Hodges stepped to the plate and delivered a 2 out single to left to score Wills and put the Dodgers up by 1. Jay Howell came on in the bottom of the 10th to close it out. After issuing a leadoff walk to Leon "the Bull" Durham, Perranoski was able to get Sauer, Keith Moreland and Bill Buckner to fly out weakly to end the game and close our the series sweep.
