Boys of Summer win NL Pennant

3 of the 5 games were decided by 1 run as the Boys of Summer prevailed in this battle of transient franchises.

Game 1 - Ebbets Field - Dodgers 7, Braves 4
The good news for Brave fans is that they scored 4 runs off of
Sandy Koufax. The bad news is that Lew Burdette gave up 7. Sandy was having a very "un-Koufax-like" day as the Braves jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 3. Hammerin' Hank Aaron started it off with a solo shot to lead off the second. Felix Millan led off the 3rd with a hard chopper to short that Maury Wills booted. Johnny Logan walked to put runners on 1st and second. Ralph Garr doubled both runners home to make it 3-0. Rico Carty lined out to short for the second out. Aaron was given and intentional pass and Dale Murphy worked out an un-intentional free pass to load the bases, but Bob Elliott lined out to Wills who made a great lunging dive to redeem himself. The Braves failed to deliver the knock out punch, which would have surely sent the great Koufax to the showers. The Dodgers answered back with 2 of their own in the bottom of the frame. Willie Davis led off with a single and John Roseboro doubled to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. Davis scored on a fielder's choice and Roseboro scored on a single by Junior Gilliam. The Dodgers knotted it in the 4th when Gil Hodges, who walked to lead off the inning, scored on a weak grounder to short by Willie Davis with the bases loaded. Burdette was able to get out of this jam by getting Roseboro to do the exact same thing as Davis. With the score 5-4 the Dodgers gave themselves a nice cushion by plating two runs in the bottom of the 7th when Gil Hodges stroked an opposite field double off the scoreboard barely missing the Abe Stark "hit this sign, win free suit" sign. Koufax was geting stronger and the Braves were unable to score again. Without his best stuff, but with a spectacular offense behind him Koufax was able to gain his 3rd win of the tournament an put the Dodgers up 1-0

Game 2 - Ebbets Field - Dodgers 8, Braves 7
HOF'ers Warren Spahn and Don Drysdale intended to hook up in a pitcher's duel. Instead both threw batting practice . Spahn had the misfortune of facing a tough right hitting Dodger lineup that feasts on southpaw pitching. Drysdale bettered his tournament record to 3-0 as well, but this victory falls squarely on the shoulders of the offense and their resiliency. The Dodgers were down 5-3 going into the bottom of the 8th when Steve Garvey smashed a double down the left fiel line with 1 out. Burdette tried to challenge the next batter,
Ron Cey, who blasted one deep to center field. There was no doubt about that ball leaving the park when it left his bat. With the game tied for some inexplicable reason Drysdale was allowed to return to the hill for the 9th. It looked like a genius move when he got Eddie Mathews and Del Crandall to make the first 2 outs. Drysdale just had to be Drysdale, and what I mean by that was he had to challenge Johnny Logan inside. Logan didn't even get a chance to flinch when the ball hit him on the arm. The Dodger bench was livid, but Logan was awarded first. Bob Elliott, pinch hitting for Millan, served one up into centerfield for a clean single to put runners on the corners with 2 out. With lefty Jim Brewer in the pen the Dodgers decided to stick with double D. Ralph Garr would have been firmly behind the 8 ball if he had to face Brewer (lefty vs lefty). Instead he got his 5th crack at Drysdale and took the first pitch and lined it off the wall in right for a 2 run double. The Braves were now up 7-5. Spahn too was allowed to start the 9th. After getting Jackie Robinson to line out to Glen Hubbard at 2nd he was removed for closer Cecil Upshaw, who left his best stuff in the bullpen or maybe in the cab...one can't be sure. DH Tommy Davis greeted Upshaw with a clean single to center. Roy Campanella did the same and was replaced with pinch runner Steve Sax. It looked like the Dodgers were going to rely on their legs and play some small ball to tie this thing up. Instead Gil Hodges took a strike on Upshaw's first offering then hit one into the middle of Bedford Avenue for a walk off homer to end the game. Without a doubt Hodges was the hitting star. The Indiana native, turned Brooklyn resident went 3 for 5 with 2 homers and 4 RBI.

Game 3 - Fulton County Stadium - Braves 3, Dodgers 2
The series shifted from one bandbox (Ebbets Field) to another (Fulton County Stadium). Fans expected to see more offensive fireworks. The Braves expected to see a stellar performance from
John Smoltz or they would be down 3-0 in the series. The Dodgers went with Fernando-mania. Rico Carty doubled home Ralph Garr with 2 outs to make it 1-0. The Dodgers played some small ball and scored 2 in the top of the third to take a brief 2-1 lead. Ralph Garr, again the catalyst, led off the third with a clean single and took second when Hodges overthrew second baseman Steve Sax. Felipe Alou worked the count full and hit a Valenzuela screwball right into Chief Knock-a-homa's teepee to put the Braves up 3-2. Both Smoltz and Valenzuela were masterful the rest of the way, as neither team would again score. Valenzuela fanned 5 of the last 8 batters he face for a total of 11 k's on the day. Smoltz closed the game out in style by fanning Hodges and Garvey to end it.

Game 4 - Fulton County Stadium - Dodgers 4, Braves 3
Tom Glavine took the mound for Atlanta looking to tie the series at 2 apiece. His opposing number,
Orel Hershiser's goal was to put his team in the driver's seat. Glavine flinched first when he served up a lead off homer to Pee Wee Reese, who was making his first start in the series. Brave manager, Justin Ryan, was having flashbacks to game 162 in 2007 when Glavine gave up 7 runs in the first inning en route to killing the Mets pennant hopes. Thankfully for Justin and the Braves Glavine would not recreate that pitiful performance. The Braves took the lead in the bottom of the 4th when Hershiser uncharacteristically lost his control and walked Mathews and Muphy. With 2 outs Henry Aaron singled home Mathews and Joe Torre followed suit by doing the same to plate Murph. The top of the 6th saw the Dodgers tie it up as Hodges again came through with the bat and singled home #42, Jackie Robinson. With the score 2-2 going into the 8th both hurlers began to tire and the strike zone began to get just a tad bit smaller. Glavine got the first 2 outs in the top of the 8th in easy fashion. A bloop single by Robinson was followed up by an opposite field poke by Campanella. Glavine wanted no part of the red hot Hodges and gave the big guy a free pass to load the bases. Steve Garvey must have felt extremely disrespected, because he wasted no time slamming a ball off the left field fence to score Jackie and Campy. The ball was hit so hard, that Garvey had to stop at first. Eddie Mathews led off the home half of the 8th with a solo homer to right to make it 4-3. Nail biting time had arrived. Hershiser, known as the bulldog, was in trouble when Joe Torre led off the 9th with a double. Claudell Washington came in to pinch run and give the Braves some speed on the bases. Washington must have had larceny in his heart or air in his head when he got caught strolling too far off of second base. Orel pivoted and threw a strike to Jackie at second to pick him off. What a costly mistake considering he was already in scoring position and nobody was out. Millan and pinch hitter Bob Elliot grounded out to end the game as the Dodgers took a commanding 3-1 series lead.

Game 5 - Fulton County Stadium - Dodgers 15, Braves 7
The Braves needed desperately to win game five or the series would be over. Hall of Famer Warren Spahn was entrusted with the task of taming the Dodger offense and getting the series to head back to Brooklyn. Spahn never made it out of the 2nd inning. A combination of Brave errors and Dodger hitting did the great lefty in. 5 of Spahn's 7 allowed runs were unearned, but the real story was the Dodger bats. Every starter, except Billy Cox had at least 1 hit.
Roy Campanella was 2 for 3 with 4 RBI and a homer. Pedro Guerrero had 3 RBI's himself. Preacher Roe started the game for the Dodgers. After being staked to a 7-0 lead he decided to throw it down the middle of the plate to keep the game moving. Don Sutton came on board for the final 3 1/3 innings to finish off the blow out. Atlanta did manage to score 7 runs of their own, but could not match the 15 runs that the Dodgers scored off of 2 HOF pitchers (Spahn & Phil Niekro). In a losing effort Rico Carty went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI's and his 6th homer of the tournament. The Dodgers, who have only lost 2 games in this tournament, will await the winner of the Chisox / O's series to see who their World Series opponent will be.
