Holiday Festivus World Series Game #1: '53 Dodgers 11, '47 Dodgers 9

GAME 1 - 53-BKN 11, 47-BKN 9
Vic Lombardi vs Bill Loes

4-5 w/6 RBI's
The extreme firepower, which comes in the form of the 1953 Boys of Summer proved to be overwhelming this afternoon.  '47 jumped out to quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but a combined 7 runs allowed over 2 innings (6th/7th) did the '47 crew in.  Billy Loes, who gave up 5 runs in almost 7 innings of work notched the win even though he did not pitch all that particularly well.  His opponent, Vic Lombardi (a lefty), was pure fodder for the righty laden power lineup of the '53 squad.  Billy Cox and Jackie Robinson hit homers for the '53 squad.  Robinson went 4 for 5 and had 6 RBI's in a monster game.  Both teams posted 15 hits in a day where pitching was not a factor.

1953 Dodgers lead series 1-0

GAME 2 - 47-BKN 6, 53-BKN 3
Ralph Branca vs Preacher Roe

2 out pinch hit HR
A 2 run homer in the bottom of the 2nd by Spider Jorgensen broke the ice.  A 3 run shot by Jackie Robinson looked to put the game away as the '47 team was up 7-0.  '53's firepower once again brought them back into the mix as they answered '47's 4 run 7th with 3 runs of their own.  Bobby Morgan's 2 out pinch hit double gave them life.  Branca, who was tossing a shutout until this point, was able to regroup and shut out the '53 lineup for the final 2 frames to get a 6-3 complete game victory.  The top of the '47 lineup (Furillo/Stanky/Robinson) went a combined 7 for 15.

GAME 3 - 47-BKN 5, 53-BKN 4
Carl Erskine vs Joe Hatten

Once again the '47 crew jumped out to an early lead courtesy of a RBI triple by Spiker Jorgensen and a fielder's choice by pitcher Hatten.  That lead would be short lived as the '53 team unloaded it's full arsenal for 3 runs in the top of the 4th.  Jackie, who is doing double duty on both varsity's, led off with a double and two batters later scored on a single by Skoonj.  Campy put the punctuation mark on the inning with a 2 run shot and just like that Joe Hatten was down 3-2.  It would get a little bit worse before it would get better for the '47 bunch.  An error by Jorgensen at third would lead to Erskine scoring a run to make it 4-2.  Unfortunately for the '53 team that run came on a DP that Jackie grounded into, which squandered a bases loaded no out opportunity.  That opened the door for '47, which benefited greatly by a 2 out 3 run homer by pinch hitter extraordinaire Arky Vaughn.  Hatten and Max Casey would combine to shutout '53 over the final 3 innings to make Vaughn's homer stand up in this one run nail biter.

GAME 4 - 47-BKN 5, 53-BKN 4
Russ Meyer vs Harry Taylor

Walk off single
Same score, same result, slightly different scenario.  For the first time in the series the '53 bunch would score first.  A walk, a wild pitch and an error by Robinson at first would set up a 2 out RBI single by Furillo to make it 1-0.  '47 would answer back thanks to Meyer letting his guard down with 2 outs and giving up a triple to the opposing pitcher (Taylor).  Pistol Pete Reiser, who when he isn't running into walls and injuring himself, is some fine player.  Reiser slapped one to left center to score Taylor and knott the game at one all.  '53 would regain the lead in the top of the 6th when Jackie led off with a double and Skoonj singled him home with one out.  That 2-1 lead wouldn't last out the inning as '47 answered back with a 2 out / 2 run rally.  After Taylor led off the inning by striking out Reiser doubled.  Stanky grounded weakly to second for out number 2.  Jackie Robinson then came through with a clutch double to tie the game at 2 and "the People's Choice" Dixie Walker singled home Jacki for the go ahead run to make it 3-2.  '47 would add an insurance run with a sac fly in the 8th and all seemed good.  Taylor got 2 quick outs in the top of the 9th then was greeted with a long homer by pinch hitter Bobby Morgan to make it 4-3.  The little colonel, Pee Wee Reese lined a double into the gap to keep the inning going.  Junior Giliam came to the plate to face the fading Taylor, who was allowed to remain in the game.  Gilliam greeted Taylor with a lined single to right to tie the game at 4.  Hugh Casey had to come in from the pen to retire Robinson to end the inning, but the collateral damage was the 4-2 lead that the '47 team just squandered.  Hughes would start the 9th for '53 in hopes of keeping '47 at bay, so the game could head to extras.  He did not do well for his cause by walking the first 2 batters that he faced (Reese & Hermanski).  Catcher Bruce Edwards bunted both runners over and Spider Jorgensen delivered a game winning RBI single.

GAME 5 - 47-BKN 8, 53-BKN 4
Clem Labine vs Ralph Branca

Perched with their backs up against the wall and facing elimination the tournament's #1 seed, the 1953 Brooklyn Dodgers, jumped out to a 3-0 lead.  Solo runs in the 1st, 3rd and 4th innings off of '47 starter Ralph Branca gave Clem Labine a nice margin to work with.  Labine, who usually comes out of the pen found the ball in his shoe and a can of Barbesol on his stool when he entered the park today because his team needed the win in the worst way.  Reese would lead the game off with a walk and move to second on a ground out by Gilliam.  Jackie would deliver a 1 out double to score Reese to make it 1-0.  In the third Jackie would single home Gilliam, who doubled right after Reese led the inning off by fanning on 4 pitches.  A solo shot int he 4th by Furillo made it 3-0.  '47's version of Jackie Robinson would homer with 1 out to get his team on the board and make it 3-1.  Duke Snider's double with nobody out in the 5th scored Robinson for the '53 team to reinstate their 3 run lead.  Then in the bottom of the inning the wheels would come off Labine's wagon and the '53 team's chances of getting back into this series.  A huge 5 run outburst would do in Labine, who by this point had probably logged more innings in this game than in any game he pitched that season.  10 batters in all would bat that inning.  Back to back doubles by Jorgensen and Furillo would get the scoring started.  With the bases loaded Dixie Walker crushed a 3-1 offering for a bases clearing double to crush Labine and the '53 team's chances.  '47 would add two solo insurance runs in the 6th and 7th to lock it up as Branca would go the distance for his second series win.  The '47 Dodgers will square off against the '98 Yankees in a chance to win the Holiday Fesivus World Series.  The Bombers made it to the finals in the solo play Yankee bracket with a 4-3 win over the 1947 Yankees.

1947 Dodgers win series 4-1
