GAME 1 - Ebbets Field - BKN 7, LAD 5
Don Sutton vs Bill Loes
LA Manager Jesse Elicker said, "that 53 team is just too darn strong". He
sure wasn't kidding, especially after the '53 Boys of Summer exploded for 6
runs off of HOF'er Don Sutton in the bottom of the 3rd. After Billy Loes gave
up a lead off homer to LA in the top of the 2nd the Brooks unloaded in the
bottom of the 3rd with 11 batters stepping to the plate. RBI singles by
Junior Gilliam and Roy Campanella preceded a 3 run shot by "the quiet man"
Gil Hodges. LA chipped
away at Loes and finally chased him with 3 runs in the 7th and the score now
6-5 Brooklyn. An RBI double by Bill Russell and a 2 run shot by Reggie Smith
made it real interesting until rookie southpaw Johnny Podres was called on for
the final 2 innings. Duke Snider would hit a solo blast to give Podres a two
run buffer. Other than a lead off single by Steve Yeager in the 9th Podres
would finish off the game without a hitch.
Brooklyn leads series 1-0
GAME 2 - Ebbets Field - BKN 6, LAD 3
Doug Rau vs Ray Moore
Once again LA took an early 1-0 lead only to be
overwhelmed by Brooklyn's firepower. Brooklyn would tie the game on a squeeze
play by Moore to score Hodges who led the inning off with a walk. A two run
single by Jackie Robinson
would make it 3-1. Reggie Smith's leadoff solo shot in the 4th once again
made it a 1 run game, but a 2 out / 2 run homer by Billy Cox in the bottom of
the inning bumped Brooklyn's lead back to 2.
Reggie Smith's 2nd homer of the
day would make it 5-3, but Jackie would reinstate his team's 3 run lead with
an RBI
single
in the 7th. Both starters didn't even pitch long enough to see an official
game. Rau was done after 4 innings where he gave up 5 runs. Moore was done
after 3 after allowing 2. Jim Hughes, who threw 1 1/3 innings of relief got
the win and Joe Black who gave up just 1 run in 4 2/3 innings got the save.
Brooklyn leads series 2-0
GAME 3 - Dodger Stadium - BKN 5, LAD
2
Carl Erskine vs Bert Hooton
True to form in this series LA scored first. This time they
posted 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st thanks to a 2 out 2 run shot by Steve
Garvey. An RBI ground out by Campy would make it 2-1 and an RBI single by
Campy 2 innings later would tie it at 2-2 where it would stay until the top of
the 8th. Knuckleballer Charlie Hough started the 8th in place of Hooton who
had a fine day. Jackie Robinson would double with nobody out to score Pee Wee
Reese to give Brooklyn a 1 run lead. With Furillo batting and the bases
loaded a wild pitch from Hough allowed Junior Gilliam to easily score.
Furillo's double would score another run and give Brooklyn an insurmountable 3
run lead. Oisk (Carl Erskine)
ran out of gas in the 9th after walking two, but Jim Hughes came on and got
the final 2 outs to close out the series.
Brooklyn wins series 3-0
