Game 1: 10/27/2010 - Great American Ballpark - Rangers 5, Reds 2
Texas broke a scoreless tie in the 6th with 3 runs off
of Cincy starter Edinson Volquez. Josh Hamilton led the inning off with a walk
and after Vlad Guerrero struck out Murphy and Kinsler singled to load the bases
with 1 out. With rookie Mitch Moreland at the plate Volquez uncorked a wild
pitch and Hamilton raced home to make it 1-0. More importantly the trailing
runners moved up 90 feet to get into scoring position when Moreland delivered
his two run single to make it 3-0. Texas threatened in the 7th when they had
runners on the corners with nobody out. A daring hit and run play backfired when
Vlad struck out swinging and Hamilton was pegged at second by Hernandez.
Inexplicably the runner on 3rd, Michael Young, didn't break for home and wound
up getting stranded there when David Murphy grounded back to the box to end the
inning. Kinsler would walk with a 3-2 count when Red reliever LeCure just missed
the strike zone. That would would come back to haunt LeCure when Mitch Moreland
homered just inside the right field foul poll to make it 5-0 after 7 1/2 innings
of play. At this point you could pretty much have turned off your 42" plasma,
because Cliff Lee was mowing down Red batters like they were a lawn and he was a
John Deere. Lee would lose focus, then lose his shutout when Ryan Hanigan led
off the bottom of the 9th with a 388 foot solo blast. With 2 out Joey Votto
would single home Scott Rolen, but the Reds could not get any closer as Lee
cranked it up a notch to jam Jay Bruce into popping out to shallow right. Texas
takes a 1-0 series lead behind a complete game performance from their ace,
Cliff Lee, who struck out 7 and walked none.
Game 2:
10/28/2010 - Rangers 5, Reds 2
Identical score two days in a row as the Rangers rode
the hot left arm of C.J. Wilson (3-0, 3.04). Wilson gave up 2 runs in 7 innings
of stellar work vs that tough Red lineup. Bronson Arroyo was staked to a 1-0
lead in the bottom of the 1st, but Michael Young's solo shot in the 4th tied it
up. Nelson Cruz' solo shot in the 5th gave
the Rangers a 2-1 lead and a 2 out 2 run single by Ian Kinsler made it 4-1 in
the 7th. Jonny Gomes cut the Rangers lead in half with a solo shot of his own in
the bottom of the 6th, but that would be all the scoring the home team would
get. Cruz hit a solo shot to lead off the 9th to give the Rangers pen a 3 run
cushion. After Darren O'Day and Kirkman got the first 2 outs in the 8th Neftali
Feliz came aboard to get the final out in the 8th and then pitch a perfect 9th
to get his 3rd save of the post season and give the Rangers a huge 2-0 series
lead as the Fall Classic headed to Arlington.
Game 3:
10/30/2010 - The Ballpark in Arlington - Reds 4,
Rangers 2
Johnny Cueto (3-1, 5.73) was called on to stop the bleeding for the beleaguered Reds. Cincy struck first with 2 big runs off of Ranger starter Colby Lewis (2-1, 2.38), thanks to a 2 run shot by Jay Bruce. A Mitch Moreland solo shot to lead off the 3rd cut Cincy's lead to 2-1. A 2 run shot by Jonny Gomes with 1 out in the 6th made it 4-1. Elvis Andrus would single home Ian Kinsler to cut the lead to 4-2, but the Rangers would get no closer and the Reds would get back into the series that Texas now held a 2-1 lead.
Game 4: 10/31/2010 - Reds 19, Rangers 6
A 9 run 7th inning by the Reds broke a 6-6 tie and propelled Cincy to a huge 19-6 victory that tied the series up a 2 games apiece. Homer Bailey wound up with the win even though he gave up 5 runs on 11 hits in 5 innings of work. His opposite number, Tommy Hunter was blasted for 7 runs in less than 6 innings of putrid work. The rest of the Rangers bullpen was just as bad, if not worse. Cincy had 20 hits. Jonny Gomes went 3 for 5 and scored 3 runs. Orlando Cabrera went 2 for 5 with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI's. David Murphy was 4 for 5 for Texas in a losing effort.
Game 5: 11/1/2010 - Rangers 8, Reds 7
An 8th run fifth inning by the hometown Rangers broke a
4-4 deadlock. Texas had a 4-1 lead after the 1st, and on most days that would be
an enormous hurdle to overcome when Cliff Lee was on the mound. Lee showed
magical signs of brilliance as well as signs of incompetence as he fanned 10 in
6 2/3 innings worth of work, but he also gave up 7 runs (6 earned). Lee, who is
looking to break the bank with a free agent contract, was bailed out by his
offense and the poor pitching of Volquez (4 1/3 IP / 9 ER) and Aaron Harang (3
2/3 IP / 4 ER). Nippert would take over for the frazzled Lee to get the final
out in the 6th as well as the final 6 outs of the game. The middle of Texas
lineup destroyed Cincy pitching. Vlad Guerrero went 3 for 5 with 4 RBI hitting
behind Josh Hamilton, who went 3 for 5 with
6 RBI. Both sluggers slammed 2 homers as the Rangers moved to within 1 victory
of a World championship.
Game 6:
11/3/2010 - Great American Ballpark - Rangers 5, Reds 3
The Series headed back to the Queen City with the Reds needing a win in game 6 to force a decisive game 7. Bronson Arroyo (2-3, 3.96), has had a history of clutch post season performances...and he would need another one if the series was going to continue. C.J. WIlson (4-0, 2.94) was looking to etch his spot in post season lore, but started off shaky when he gave up the first run of the game in the bottom of the second. A hit batsman (Phillips) led to that run when Vlad booted a single to right by Jonny Gomes to allow Phillips to score easily. Vlad, who spent most of the 2010 campaign as a DH did not look like the fleet footed outfielder that he was a decade earlier in Montreal. Cincy 1-0 lead would evaporate quickly in the top of the 4th when Nelson Cruz hit a two run shot and Ian Kinsler followed it up with a solo shot to make it 3-1. A much needed Mitch Moreland solo shot in the 8th made it 4-1 as Texas began to chill the bubbly. Cincy would have none of that celebration stuff as Stubbs hit a 2 runs hot off of Wilson in the bottom of the 8th to cut the Rangers lead to 4-3. That would be all for Wilson, who pitched his heart out. O'Day the submariner, would enter the game and face Scott Rolen and get him to pop out to Young at 3rd. The well traveled Darren Oliver would replace O'Day and give Texas the much coveted lefty/lefty matchup vs Joey Votto. Oliver jammed Votto, who hit a 1 hopper back to the box, which turned into a neat little 1-6-3 DP to end the inning and quite possibly the season for the upstart Reds. With 2 out in the top of the 9th Josh Hamilton came through with a mammoth solo blast off of Red closer Cordero to make it 5-3 and suck the life out of the ballpark adjacent to the Ohio River. Neftali Feliz would mow down the Reds in the bottom of the 9th and end the series in style by fanning pinch hitter Laynce Nix on 4 pitches. Ranger players would mob their close as the celebration began. Texas takes the 2010 World Championship by defeating the Reds 4 games to 2 in a highly entertaining series that featured two great offensive teams.

Game # 1 |
Game # 2 | Game # 3 | Game # 4 | Game # 5 | Game # 6 | Game # 7 |
Joey Votto | Bronson Arroyo | Buster Posey | Juan Uribe | Laynce Nix | Aubrey Huff | Paul Janish |
Game 1: 10/16/2010 - AT&T Park - SF, CA - Reds 5, Giants 1
Edinson Volquez and Sam Lecure combined to outduel two
time Cy Young award winner Tim Lincecum. Volquez pitched 4 1/3 innings and
surrendered just one solo run while fanning 7, but walking 5. LeCure went the
final 4 2/3 innings and was flat out dynamic allowing just 3 hits and fanning 6.
Lincecum gave up 3 runs over the first 2 innings, then posted goose eggs for his
final 4 innings of work. Joey Votto's 2 out,
2 run homer in the first broke the ice. Jonny Gomes scored the third run when
catcher Ramon Hernandez grounded into a DP.
Game 2:
10/17/2010 - Reds 4, Giants 1
Bronson Arroyo stole
the spotlight from his opponent Matt Cain by going 8 1/3 innings and allowing
just 1 run. Francisco Cordero would come on board to get the final 2 outs and
notch the save, which put the Reds up 2-0 as the series headed to the Queen
City. Despite striking out twice Joey Votto hit his second homer in consecutive
days. Ramon Hernandez also hit a homer. Votto's round tripper was his 4th of the
2010 postseason.
Game 3:
10/19/2010 - Great American Ballpark - Giants 12, Reds 5
Jonathan Sanchez (2-0, 4.76) played the role of "stopper" for the Giants who found themselves on the road and down 2-0 in the series. San Fran jumped all over Red starter Johnny Cuerto (1-1, 11.00) to the tune of 3 runs in the top of the 1st. Cincy answered back with 2 runs in the bottom of the frame to close the gap to 1 run. A 4 run fifth inning blew the game wide open. Rookie catcher Buster Posey went 3 for 5 with 4 RBI and a triple + two doubles. Bay Area native and Philly exile Pat Burrell hit 2 homers and also knocked in 4.
Game 4: 10/20/2010 - Giants 12, Reds 8
Madison Bumgarner (4 IP / 6 R) was bad...thankfully for him and the Jints Homer Bailey (5 IP / 8 R) was much worse. The Giant pen did yeoman work keeping the Reds' bats at bay. Buster Posey had his second consecutive 4 RBI game. Juan Uribe one upped him with a 5 RBI day, which included a 3 run blast in the 5th.
Game 5: 10/21/2010 - Reds 8, Giants 5
Cincy was able to salvage the final game of the 3 games
in Great American Ballpark. With the score tied at 5 the Reds victimized Giant
closer Brian Wilson for 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th to break the stalemate.
After Ramon Hernandez doubled to lead off the inning pinch hitter
Laynce Nix singled him home to give the Reds
a 6-5 lead. Three batters later Scott Rolen singled home Nix and Brandon
Phillips scored the 3rd run of the inning on a Jonny Gomes sac fly. Giant
starter Tim Lincecum gave up 5 runs in 5 innings and blew his chance to give his
team a lead in the series. Volquez was cruising, but rubbed up a blister with 1
out in the 5th after fanning 7 and not allowing a run. The Reds' bats were able
to overcome a shaky performance by their pen.
Game 6:
10/23/2010 - AT&T Park - Giants 7, Reds 4
Bronson Arroyo (2-1, 3.38) was not able to live up to his game 2 lights out performance. San Fran lit Arroyo up for 5 runs in the bottom of the 1st, which was too much for the Reds' offense to overcome. Aubrey Huff had himself a 4-4 day, which raised his post season average to .485. Matt Cain (2-1, 2.79) was able to turn around his fortunes with a solid 7 inning / 2 run performance. Black Beard himself, Brian Wilson, was shaky in 2 innings of relief, which almost turned an easy outing into a save situation.
Game 7: 10/24/2010 - Reds 9, Giants 7
The Bay Area was treated to their first game 7 since the 1962 Fall Classic where the Giants lost on the final swing of the game thanks to Yankees' Bobby Richardson snagging a Willie McCovey bullet that would have been a hit if it was place and inch in either direction of Richardson. Over time that great fall classic moment has grown to epic proportion. Fast forward to 2010 and the Giants were in a very similar spot. Down 9-7 and heading into the bottom of the 9th the Giants had runners on 1st (Burrell) and 2nd (Posey) with one out. Pablo Sandoval hit a slow roller to short that Paul Janish tossed to first for the 2nd out of the inning. On the play both runners moved up 90 feet and were one single away from tying the game. Juan Uribe stepped up to the plate and in a "McCovey Moment" lined a Francisco Cordero off speed pitch to his opposite number (Janish) for the third and final out of the game and the series. One pitch, one swing and one catch...as a season for both teams lies in the balance. Once again San Fran was a victim in a game of inches. Cincy squeaks by and heads to the Fall Classic vs the Texas Rangers.

Game 1: 10/15/2010 - The Ballpark in Arlington - Rangers 5, Yankees 4 (11 inn)
The series opener featured the marquee matchup of
premier lefties (Cliff Lee and C.C. Sabathia). C.C. had trouble right out of the
box as evidenced by the 2 runs the Rangers scored in the first and the solo run
that they posted in the 2nd. A Mark Teixeira error on Elvis Andrus leadoff liner
put C.C. behind the 8-ball right off the bat. The big man had a tough time
recovering from the error. Michael Young's sac fly netted the first run and
Nelson Cruz' line single to left with 2 out scored Josh Hamilton for run number
2. Late season acquisition Jeff Francoeur showed his valued right away by
singling home Mitch Moreland with 2 out to make it 3-0. The Yankee offense was
sputtering thanks to the deception put forth by Lee. That was until the 8th when
back to back doubles by Jorge Posada and Curtis Granderson finally put the Yanks
on the scoreboard. Grandy went to third on a ground out by Berkman and scored
when Derek Jeter grounded to third. Texas answered back in the bottom of the 8th
when Cruz scored on a ground out by Bengie Molina to make it 4-2. Lee started
the 9th despite the fact that he looked to be running on empty. A-rod singled
and Robby Cano doubled to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out. That would
mark the end of Lee's day as Ogando came on board to try to do the impossible
and get 3 outs w/out allowing the tying run. Step #1 was to get Tex out and keep
the ball in the infield. Ogando did one better. He fanned Tex on 4 pitches. Up
stepped Posada with 1 out and Cano on 3rd. Everyone in the house expected "Georgie"
to be swinging away. Nobody expected him to lay down a perfect squeeze bunt,
which he did to perfection to score Robby. The game headed into extra innings.
After a scoreless 10th the Yanks went down easily thanks to the handy pitching
of Dustin Nippert who didn't allow any runs in 2 innings worth of work. Kerry
Wood, who pitched a perfect 10th inning, was not so fortunate in the 11th. Vlad
Guerrero led off the inning and walked on 5 pitches. Michael Young popped out to
first for the 1st out of the inning thanks to Sergio Mitre comming out of the
pen to get him. Mitre then had the misfortune of facing
Nelson Cruz who lined a slicing bullet down the right field line.
The ball rattled around in the corner and Nick Swisher just couldn't get the
handle. Vlad took full advantage of it and made a Enos Slaughter type mad dash
all the way around to score from first to give the Rangers the opening salvo in
the series.
Game 2:
10/16/2010 - Yankees 3, Rangers 2
Veteran Andy Pettitte,
the winningest pitcher in the history of the post season was tasked with earning
a split for the Yankees. His opponent C.J. Wilson was looking to put the Bombers
in an 0-2 hole. A-Rod broke the ice with a 2 run shot off of Young in the top of
the 3rd. That lead would last just 1 inning. In the bottom of the 4th Vlad
doubled home Michael Young with 1 out and scored on a Nelson Cruz grounder
thanks to his adept base running by taking 3rd on a play at the plate. It would
remain tied at 2-2 until the top of the 9th when 38 year old veteran catcher
Jorge Posada was able to summon the magic from post seasons past by blasting a
solo shot off of reliever Derrek Holland, who struck out the other 3 batters he
faced that inning. Most in the house expected the "Sandman" to enter, but
Pettitte was so sharp he was easily able to close out the victory and even the
series, as both teams headed to the Bronx.
Game 3:
10/18/2010 - Yankee Stadium - Rangers 6, Yankees 2
In a battle of young hurlers Texas' Tommy Hunter got the better of New York's Phillip Hughes. Early on it looked like neither guy would make it past the early innings as both teams exchanged solo runs in the first and Texas posted 2 in the 2nd when Bengie Molina singled home Nelson Cruz, who singled and stole second. Curtis Granderson hit a bullet into the short right field porch of the "Ballpark across the street" in the bottom of the 5th to make it a 3-2 game still in favor of the Rangers. It stayed that way until the top of the 8th when Hughes fell apart and gave up 3 game breaking runs. Nelson Cruz' 2 RBI single plated Andrus and Young. He then stole second as part of a well orchestrated double steal that put Josh Hamilton on 3rd where he easily scored on Ian Kinsler's single. Hunter would give way to to Clay Rapada, who would get the final 2 outs to give the Rangers a 2-1 series lead.
Game 4: 10/19/2010 - Rangers 3, Yankees 1
For 4 shutout innings the "good" A.J Burnette showed up and dominated the Rangers to the tune of 6 strikeouts. Unfortunately the "bad" A.J. would rare his ugly head in the top of the 5th and allow 3 big runs to score for the Rangers. They Yanks were up 1-0 thanks to a 4th inning solo shot by "El Capi-tan" Derek Jeter. "Jeets" solo shot was also the Yankees first hit off of Ranger starter Colby Lewis, who was flat out "dealin" (8.2 IP / 1 ER / 9k's). In that fateful 5th Burnette loaded the bases with 1 out thanks to singles by Molina, Andrus and Young. Hamilton hit a bomb to right center that Swisher caught flush up against the wall. Molina, who was tagging easily scored on Hamilton's blast. Andrus would then score on a passed ball, since he too advanced one base by tagging up. Vlad would then finish off the scoring by singling home Young. Lewis would continue to get stronger as evidenced by his striking out the 4 Yankees in a row (Tex, Posada, Grandy and Cervelli) to end the 7th and 8th innings respectively. Darren Oliver would come on for the lefty/lefty matchup vs Robby Cano for the final out. Cano gave it a ride, but Hamilton was able to safely secure the ball just shy of the warning track to end it. Texas now had a 3 games to 1 lead.
Game 5: 10/20/2010 - Yankees 4, Rangers 1
In a rematch of the game 1 marquee matchup both hurlers
(Cliff Lee and C.C. Sabathia) gave the fans their money's worth. Facing
elimination C.C. had no margin for error and when Met castoff Jeff Francoeur
singled home Nelson Cruz in the top of the 4th the pressure really began to amp
up. For their trouble the Yankee offense just couldn't solve the mystery call
Cliff Lee. The veteran lefty had his "A" game going as evidenced by the 13
strikeouts he would post. New York needed some sort of break to stay alive. That
break came in the form of two out single by Ramiro Pena in the bottom of the
6th. Pena promptly attempted to steal second and easily wound up on 3rd when
backup catcher Matt Treanor, who lost his starting job when Molina arrived from
San Fran, airmailed his throw to second into center field. The Bombers still
needed another break and they got that when Lee badly fooled Brett Gardner on a
pitch that turned out to be a knubber to short. By the time Andrus fielded it
the speedy Gardner was already crossing the bag at first and Pena was touching
home plate. The game was now tied a 1-1 and it stayed that way until the bottom
of the 8th when the normally infallible Lee gave up a 2 out bases loaded double
to A-Rod. In one swing of a bat both men
reversed their fortunes. Lee, the ultimate clutch / gamer pitcher cracked under
the pressure of the moment and gave up 3 runs. A-Rod, the poster boy for coming
up small in big spots, looked like the future HOF'er / $33 million player he is
supposed to be. As soon as Jeter touched the plate with the Bombers 4th run of
the game the "sandman" began throwing in earnest in the pen. That meant light's
out for the Rangers in the 9th as they were set to face the greatest post season
reliever in baseball history. Fans of the pinstripes simply refer to this freak
of nature who defies age and gravity with his cutter, as "Mo". His baseball card
says Mariano Rivera from Panama and his cutter says "lights out to opposing
hitters". Like clockwork Vlad, Cruz and Kinsler went down in order and this
series was headed back to Texas with the Rangers up 3-2.
Game 6:
10/22/2010 - The Ballpark in Arlington - Rangers 13, Yankees 2
The game 2 matchup of Pettitte and Wilson was on centerstage one more time. The Yankees fresh off their clutch late inning defeat of Cliff Lee set their crosshairs on C.J. Wilson. New York had full confidence in their starter Andy Pettitte, who had a complete game win in game 2 and has pitched in just about every possible post season situation. Surely the smart money was on Andy and the Yanks to take this to game 4. Early on even the most casual baseball fan could tell that Pettitte just couldn't defy father time for one more big post game performance. Texas jumped all over the lefty, who calls Texas his home, and posted 3 crushing runs all with 2 out. 5 consecutive singles (Hamilton, Vlad, Cruz, Kinsler, Frenchy) accounted for the run production. Texas would then post solo runs in the 2nd and 3rd thanks to a Michael Young homer and a singly by Frenchy that scored Vlad. A solo shot by Vlad to lead off the 6th put the Rangers up 6-0 and all but signaled the end of another Yankee dynasty. New York finally got to Young for 2 runs in the 7th to cut the lead to 4 and give their fans watching back in New York some glimmer of hope. Wilson would exit the game after 6 2/3 innings of work and hand the ball off to the pen. Pettitte was gone after giving up 6 runs on 11 hits in his 6 innings. The Ranger bats added insult to injury by bombarding the Yanks with 6 runs in the bottom of the 8th thanks to three homers. Vladimir Guerrero, who went 3 for 4, hit his second homer of the game and was followed by solo shots by Kinsler and Francoeur. Scott Feldman, the forgotten man on the Rangers staff, finished out the 9th as the champagne began to flow because the Ranger franchise ended a 50 year drought and finally made their first World Series ever.

Halladay | Arroyo | Bruce | Votto |
Game 1: Final: Phillies 7, Reds 4 (Citizens Bank Ballpark)
Roy Halladay was
dominant for 8 innings and showed no hope to the visiting Reds until the 9th
when he lost interest. Philly staked him to a 3-1 lead, then blew the game open
with 4 in the bottom of the 8th. Halladay aimed for the middle of the plate and
allowed 3 runs, but the victory was never in jeopardy. "Doc" fanned 7 Reds and
totally outclassed his opposite number Edinson Volquez who gave up 3 runs in 6.
Ryan Howard's 3 run homer in the 4th broke the ice in what was a scoreless tie
up until that point. Jayson Werth's 2 run double in the 8th ws followed up by
Raul Ibanez' 2 run single. Up until the 9th Jay Bruce's solo shot to lead off
the top of the 5th accounted for all of Cincy's run production.
Game 2:
Final: Reds 1, Phillies 0
Bronson Arroyo
stunned the home town fans in South Philly by tossing a neat little complete
game 4 hitter. He needed to be that good, because his run supported would come
in the form of a Jay Bruce RBI single in the top of the 5th. Philly's only
threaten Arroyo in the bottom of the 6th when they sandwiched 2 hits around 2
strikeouts to put runners on the corners with 2 out before Ryan Howard put a
scare into the visting dugout with a shot that Bruce caught up against the
scoreboard in right. Roy Oswalt went 6 innings and gave up the 1 run that made
the difference. Madson, Contreras and Durbin pitched scoreless innings in relief
in hopes of Philly getting those big runs that never arrived.
Game 3:
Final: Reds 10, Phillies 6 (Great American Ballpark)
On a dark and dank overcast day the Reds benefited from some home cooking and knocked Philly starter Cole Hamels out of the box with 2 out in the 2nd inning. The sensitive Californian surrendered 8 runs on 7 hits and once again proved that when the elements were not optimal neither was his pitching. To their credit the Phightins chipped away at Red starter Johnny Cuerto to get to within 6. Aaron Harang was afforded a 4 inning save even though his pitching (3 runs on 7 hits) was less than effective. The Reds hit 3 homers (Drew Stubbs, Scott Rolen & Jay Bruce) with the latter going 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 3 runs knocked in. Centerfielder Drew Stubbs was 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. Joey Votto received 2 walks in an obvious pitch around scenario. Both times the Phils were made to pay as Bruce came up big. A huge downpour hit the Queen city and after waiting 3 hours the league office was forced to cancel the game in the 9th inning due to rain.
Game 4: Final: Reds 7, Phillies 1
Halladay returned to the hill to help the Phightins stave off elimination. He picked up right where he left off in game one by allowing Cincy to score early and often. Doc was hitting the showers after 6 innings where he yielded 5 runs on 7 hits. Cincy tapped Homer Bailey for the clincher and the 24 year old righthander did not disappoint. Bailey exited the game in the top of the 7th with 1 out having struck out 7 Phils and allowing just a solo run when Jayson Werth singled home Placido Polanco in the top of the 4th. Four Red relievers (Rhodes, Chapman, Masset & Cordero) shut down the vaunted Philly offense the rest of the way. Joey Votto finally got the Phillies to pitch to him and made them pay by going 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 4 RBI thanks to 2 homers as the Reds closed out the favored Phils in this laugher.

Lincecum | Posey | Sandoval |
Game 1: Final: San Francisco 1, Atlanta 0.
Tim Lincecum fanned
15 batters in a 8 1/3 inning dominant performance before Brian Wilson came on
board to get the final 2 outs and nail down the save. Tim Hudson did his
best to keep the Braves in this one and the only spot on his record was an
unearned run charged to his record in the 5th thanks to an untimely error by his
shortstop Alex Gonzalez. Andres Torres singled with one out and got to
third thanks to the Gonzalez error, which setup a RBI single by Aubrey Huff.
Neither team mounted much offense as it was a day where pitching took center
stage.
Game 2:
Final: San Francisco 10, Atlanta 4.
San Fran bombarded Brave starter Jair Jurrjens for 8
runs in less than 2 innings worth of work. Matt Cain went 5 2/3 innings
then tired after throwing almost 120 pitches. The Giant pen was able to
hold down the fort to put the Braves on the brink of elimination.
Buster Posey and Pat Burrell both hit big 2
run homers to help crush the Braves hopes. In total the Giants banged out
18 hits including a 4 for 5 day by Nate Schierholtz. Posey had a 4 RBI day
and Huff went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI's.
Game 3:
Final: San Francisco 9, Atlanta 4.
Atlanta led 3-2 after 2 innings, but the normally reliable big game pitcher Derek Lowe could not hold the lead. The Giants built on their momentum from game 2 and began scoring runs in bunches. Lowe left the game after giving up 7 runs in 6 innings. Jonathan Sanchez showed signs of nervousness, but his team's offense was able to overcome his inability to hold the Brave bats at bay. Sanchez exited after 5 innings with the lead and the Giant pen did the best. Buster Posey was a perfect 4 for 4 on the day and Pablo Sandoval blasted 2 homers for 3 RBI as the Giants easily clinched a spot in the NLCS. Atlanta was forced to use 7 pitchers, but the hole dug by Lowe's terrible performance was impossible to overcome. Atlanta hit a combined .189 for the series, while the Giants performed at a .342 clip.

Game 1: 10/6/2010 - Tropicana Field - St. Pete, FL - Rangers 5, Rays 2 (12 inn)
The post season
deity named Cliff Lee took the hill for the Rangers and began influencing the
game even before it started. Tampa deciding that Lee was unbeatable made the
call to push their ace, David Price, back 1 day in favor of Matt Garza. Lee came
out of the gate flat and gave up 2 quick runs in the bottom of the 1st thanks to
a 2 run shot by B.J. Upton. Credit Carl Crawford who led off with a single, then
stole 2nd and 3rd, with rattling the normally stoic Lee. Unfortunately for the
Rays Lee was quick to gain his composure by striking out the side after a Evan
Longoria single. Once he got locked into a groove Lee was flat out unbeatable as
he began posting goose eggs on the board inning after inning. In the top of the
5h Elvis Andrus singled home Michael Moreland with 2 outs to make it a 2-1 game.
The following inning the Rangers would tie it up when Ian Kinsler singled home
Josh Hamilton with 2 outs. That would be all the scoring we'd see in regulation.
Lee would actually pitch into the 11th inning, but leave after allowing a lead
off double to Sean Rodriguez. Darren O'Day would bail out the tiring lefty by
retiring the side without a hitch. Meanwhile Tampa began parading a cavalcade of
relievers after Garza finished his day after 7 great innings of work. In total 6
relievers would tow the hill for the Rays. The top of the 12th inning saw Lance
Cormier take his shot at the Ranger lineup. Nelson Cruz would lead off with a
clean single to center. Cormier was preoccupied with not allowing Cruz to steal
second and lost Kinsler to a 5 pitch walk. Pinch hitter Andres Blanco bunted
both runners into scoring position, which facilitated an intentional pass to
Bengi Molina to load the bases with 1 out. Ninth place hitter
Julio Borbon lined one into right to score
the two lead runners. Andrus followed with a hit of his own to plate Molina and
give the Rangers a 3 run lead which closer Neftali Feliz easily closed out to
give the Rangers the opener.
Game 2:
10/7/2010 - Tropicana Field -
Rangers 4, Rays 3
David Price would finally get his turn
in the rotation. He would face C.J. Wilson, who hit a bump in the road in the
bottom of the 3rd, which cost the Rangers their 1-0 lead. Rays catcher John Jaso
would lead the home half of the 3rd off with a single, then move to second when
Wilson uncorked a wild pitch. Lead off man Jason Bartlett would walk and Reid
Brignac would bunt both runners up 90 feet. After Carl Crawford grounded out to
third Evan Longoria was given an intentional pass to load the bases and face B.J.
Upton who hit a rocket off the wall in right center for a bases clearing double.
Up 3-1 Price had the Rangers' batters under total control, but after throwing
106 pitches in 7 innings he was replaced by Joaquin Benoit with the score 3-2.
Benoit is a decent relieve, but he's no Price and it showed when he gave up a 2
run homer to Michael Young with nobody out
in the 8th. Young's missile would give the Rangers a 4-3 lead with 2 innings to
go. The 8th inning would be manned by a committee of 3 hurlers for the Rangers.
Michael Kirkman was tasked with getting Crawford out, and he did so via a
comebacker. Alexi Ogando then came on to get Longoria, but instead gave up a
clean single to left. He then walked Upton to put runners on 1st and 2nd with 1
out, but came through in the clutch by striking out Ben Zobrist. That would end
his day as closer Neftali Feliz was called on to get a 4 out save. Feliz blew
away pinch hitter Matt Joyce on 3 pitches to end the inning and do the same to
Rodriguez who led off the bottom of the 9th. He would easily get the final 2 out
and give the Rangers a 2-0 series lead as they headed home to Arlington to close
it out.
Game 3:
10/9/2010 - The Ballpark in Arlington (TX) - Rangers 5, Rays 1
James Shields
(13-15, 5.18) was given the unenviable task of trying to stave off elimination
against a Ranger team that was firing on all 8 cylinders. Colby Lewis (12-13,
3.72) would be in a no pressure environment as his team was up two zip with 3
chances to close out the Rays. Texas struck first with a solo run as Nelson Cruz
singled home Andrus. Tampa answered right back when Carlos Pena hit a solo shot
with 1 out in the top of the second. Shields would hang tough and never break,
but he would bend as evidenced by the solo runs that he gave up in the 3rd and
the 4th. In the 3rd he got Michael Young to ground into a DP that scored Borbon
and in the 4th he gave up a solo shot to Cruz. Down 3-1 Shields started the 7th,
but could not finish out the frame. After Cruz (3-4 on the day) led off with a
double and moved to third on Kinsler's single. That set the stage for
Mitch Moreland to come through in the clutch
with an RBI double. Kinsler would score when Borbon grounded out to short and
just like the at the score was 5-1. Fans were beginning to celebrate the
possibility of the Ranger franchises first ever post season series win. 3
perfect innings of relief by Matt Harrison shut the door on Tampa's season and
quite possibly on Tampa's run as a contender since key players like Carl
Crawford will test the free agent waters as soon as the World Series concludes.
