GAME 1: (BOS 6, PHI 4) -
Both teams started out slow in what would be considered a feeling out
process. Boston showed that they were truly built for the undersized arena
that they play in by digging out countless loose pucks in the corner. Bobby
Orr looked solid on both ends of the ice. Espo scored a hat trick and
youngster Terry O'Reilly potted 2 as the Bruins won handily. Parent kept
Philly in it early, but the Bruin barrage was too much for him and his
overwhelmed defensive corps. Early in the 3rd young O'Reilly too exception
to what he considered a cheap shot and beat the stuffing out of Flyer Orest
Kindrachuck.

GAME 2: (BOS 5, PHI 3) -
This was one nasty game, but what would you expect when the Broad
St. Bullies play against the Big Bad Bruins ? By period 3 a full
scale brawl broke out thanks to the tight checking and small
Gahden rink.
O'Reily and Schultz squared off in the main event.
Bobby Orr even dropped the gloves, which really could have hurt
the Bruins since he is what makes them go. Boston controled the
pace for the most part and Parent did his best to keep his boys
in it. With the score tied 3-3 in the 3rd the Bruins scored 2
goals to put the game away. Wayne Cashman netted the go ahead
goal almost half way through the period. The turning point of the
game occurred 5 minutes later as Bobby Orr summoned up a burst of
speed to track Gary Dornhoffer down from behind and break up a
clear path breakaway. From that point on Philly would not get
another high quality scoring opportunity. The series now heads to
the Spectrum for games 3 and 4, with game 3 being a must win for
Philly.

GAME 3: (PHI 5, BOS 4) -
Well I figured out how to play this old sim online and I got my
old bud Howie to connect to my computer with an online sharing
tool like Webex. We played Games 3/4 together and it was a lot of
fun. The dice rolling workaround added drama to it as well.
Anyway...Philly returned home to there raucus fans and Mr. Parent
stood on his head saving 27 of 31 shots. Granted he did give up 4
goals, but the was bombarded by the Bruins from point blank
range. It was 3-3 in the third when
Gary Dornhoefer
converted on a Rick MacLeish pass at the 9:37 mark to put Philly
up by 1. Four minutes later "the hammer" Dave Schultz took a Don
Saleski feed and roofed it to extend Philly's lead to 2. Boston
didn't quit, but they didn't have much time left and that Parent
guy had to be beat. With less than 2 minutes to go Carol Vadnais
blasted one from the point by a partially screened Parent to cut
the lead to 1. Gilles Gilbert was pulled from the net for the
etra attacker, but Phil Esposito took a dumb penalty, which took
away the man advantage and Boston's chance to tie it.

GAME 4: (BOS 3, PHI 2) -
No fights in this one, but the checking and the team defense was
fierce. Players had a tough time finding space to get off high
quality shots. The Flyers got on the board first in the middle of
the opening period. Don Saleski notched his 4th goal of the
series. Ken Hodge answered back midway through the 2nd to tie the
game. Four and a half minutes later Rick MacLeish scored a power
play goal from the slot and philly was up 2 to 1. The Flyers held
on to that lead until the first minute of the 3rd period when Ken
Hodge notched his second of the game and 4th of the series. Both
team then settled into bump and grind neutral zone playoff hockey
until the great
Bobby Orr
took control of the game with just over a minute to play.
Summoning up whatever he had left in the tank Bobby raced end to
end and flipped a pass over to O'Donnell who slipped it by Parent
with :57 to go. Flyer fans were stunned. Philly eventually got
control of the puck after Boston played keep away, but they never
got off a shot. Boston heads home with a decisive 3 games to 1
lead in the series.

GAME 5: (PHI 5, BOS 4)
- Philly opened the scoring at 18:46 of the opening period as
Bobby Clarke scored a bad angle goal that went off of Gilbert's
waffle. For most of the period both teams clogged up the neutral
zone. Shots on goal were at a premium. Blandon scored at the 5:20
mark off of a beautiful drop pass from captain Bobby Clarke. Ten
seconds late Flyer winger Ross Lonsberry took an ill advised
tripping penalty, which gave Boston the first power play of the
evening. Philly put forth a fantastic defensive effort playing
keep away for most of the 2 minutes. Espo did get a quality shot
on Parent who deflected it into the crowd. Twenty seconds after
Boston's Power play expired Andre Savard took a minor for Boston.
A few seconds later Clarke scored his second goal of the game as
Flett threw one at the net and the little scrapper, Clarke, put
slammed it in as he shook off a Carol Vadnais check. Boston
proceeded to play undisciplined hockey as Forbes took another
minor and Bill Barber scored another power play goal for the
Flyers to increase their lead to 4-0. At this point Boston's
coach decided to pull Gilbert and replace him with Brooks. At
18:54 of the second Espo scored his 5th of the series by getting
his own rebound and slamming it home past Parent to cut the
deficit to 3 goals. Boston again attempted to hand the game to
Philly when Savard took a 5 minute major. Thankfully Philly's
Blaton took a 2 minute minor himself to help the Bruins kill off
the major. Thanks to a Ed Van Impe 5 minute major penalty due to
spearing the Bruins started the 3rd with almost a full 5 minutes
of power play time. At the 18:02 mark with 2:38 left to go in the
power play Orr beat two defenders and centered to Johnny Bucyk
who banged it home to cut the Flyer lead to 2. Philly did a
masterful job killing off the balance of the penalty and to add
insult to injury Gary Doernhoefer scored a goal just as the
penalty to Van Impe expired. Boston fought back and Bucyk scored
at the 9:45 mark to make it 5-3 and keep the pressure on Philly,
which was playing to stave off elimination. At the 9:24 mark Orr
got slashed by Flett, but the refs didn't see it. Being ever so
protective of his knees Orr dropped the gloves and started
pounding the Flyer winger. Luckily for Boston their was no loss
of manpower. Unluckily for them they lost Orr for 5 minutes, and
without him on the ice this team's offense sputters. Bill Barber
squirted a backhander past Brooks at 5:43 to bump the lead back
up to 3 to ensure that the series would return to Philly for a
game 6.

GAME 6: (BOS 3, PHI 2)
- Kate Smith was on hand to sing the anthem as the City of
Brotherly Love got behind their Flyers. Philly came out
flying and dominated play. Boston hardly touched the puck
as the great Bobby Orr was bottled up in his zone. The
first period looked to be a stalemate until Ross Lonsberry took a
Rick MacLeish feed and beat Gilles Gilber to his glove side.
Philly took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Lonsberry scored again 7:45 into the 2nd as he tapped home a
rebound off of a Gary Dornhoefer wrist shot. With a 2 goal
lead and the greatest goalie on the planet the Flyers looked in a
great position to force game 7. Then with 14:17 gone in the
period Flyer captain Bobby Clarke took a tripping penalty, which
gave the Bruins a glimmer of hope. Boston moved the puck
around and kept the Flyer D moving. Terry O'Reilly fed Orr
at the point who took a wicked slapper that Johnny Bucyk tipped
past Parent. You can't beat Bernie dead on, so you have to
rely on slight of hand and tip of puck. With the score
2-1and 5 minutes left to go in the 2nd period the Bruins had new
life. Neither team scored as the period expired. The
third period started with Philly needing to just hold on to get
to game 7. Boston needed 1 to tie and 2 to win.
Philly controlled the puck, but just couldn't get a shot off,
while Boston was content to pick it's spots whenever they arose.
With only 2:48 gone in the 3rd Bruin defenseman Carol Vadnais
took a feed from Espo and blasted one from the point thru traffic
and past Parent to tie the contest. At that point you could
hear a pin drop in the Spectrum as Flyer fans felt the life
sucked out of them. For the next 5 minutes both teams
battled hard, most of the time in the neutral zone. The at
the 12:00 mark Wayne Cashman pulled free from an Ed Van Impe
check and roofed on past Parent who looked to have been
interfered with by Kenny Hodge. The officials either never
saw it or refused to make a penalty call in such a close game.
Coach Fred "the fog" Shero began voicing his opinion quite
vociferously to the refs, but to no avail. With 8 minutes
left to play the Flyers went into desperation mode as the Bruins
went into a minor shell. In the last minute of play the
Bruins played keep away and Philly never even got a chance to
pull Parent in favor of an extra skater. Parent saw 30
shots, while Gilbert saw only 14. Bernie was fantastic in a
losing cause and the press voted him the winner of the Conn
Smythe trophy for keeping his team in the series game after game.
Bruin captain Johnny Bucyk accepted Lord Stanley's chalice an
proceeded to skate around the rink. Flyer fans either boed
or left the arena. No incidents occurred. Wayne
Cashman scored the Cup clincher. |
