The Steelers completed their improbable run from sixth seed to Super Bowl Champions with a 24-12 win over the Carolina Panthers. The game was much closer than the final score would indicate as Carolina had numerous chances to take a fourth quarter lead, including a pair of drives that made it into Steeler territory with under six minutes to go in the game. The Panthers' biggest opportunity died when, down 17-12, Jake Delhomme's fourth-and-four pass to Steve Smith fell incomplete at the Steeler 16 yard line with just over five and a half minutes to go. The Carolina defense stood tall, holding the Steelers to a three-and-out on their next possession, but the Panthers' next drive also fell short on a failed fourth-down conversion, this time from the Steelers' 48 with two minutes left in the game.
The Panthers still had all of their time outs left, so instead of playing it
safe, Pittsburgh aggressively threw the ball, scoring on a 14-yard Ben
Roethlisberger to Heath Miller connection with just over a minute to go to
finish the scoring for the day.
After a slow start, Roethlisberger had a huge day, completing 19 of 31 passes
for 309 yards and three touchdowns. He was harassed by the Panthers' D though.
He was sacked twice and lost a fumble. After a pair of great postseason
performances, Willie Parker put in a workman-like effort with 79 yards on 20
carries. He also caught three passes, including a nine-yard touchdown pass in
the second quarter.
"Missed opportunity" was the phrase of the day for Carolina who couldn't
capitalize on turnovers or their own big plays most of the day. A prime example
of this was DeShaun Foster's 70-yard third quarter scamper that took the ball to
the Steelers' 18, but resulted in no points after Delhomme threw an interception
on the next play.
Other than the big run, Foster was held in check all day, managing only 23 yards
on his other nine carries. Steve Smith caught 10 passes for 96 yards, but was
held out of the end zone. Delhomme threw early and often, but only completed 50
percent of his passes.
Both teams struggled offensively early, only managing a field goal each, but
Pittsburgh caught fire late in the second quarter thanks to a pair of
RoethlisbergerTD passes.
They took a 17-3 lead into half. However, a nine-zero third quarter by Carolina
kept things close as Delhomme hit Ricky Proehl with a 32-yard touchdown strike
for the Panthers' only touchdown of the game late in the third quarter. A failed
two-point conversion after that touchdown brought the game to 17-12. The
Panthers couldn't keep the momentum going in the fourth quarter, and the
Pittsburgh Steelers held on for the franchise's fifth Super Bowl victory.
