98-Ohio St 21, 02-Wash St. 6: DALLAS (AP)-- After getting off to a rocky start, and falling behind early, the 98 Ohio State Buckeyes rallied to beat the 02 Washington State Cougars 21-6. The Cougars got off to a good start, putting together two good drives in the first quarter, which lead to field goals to put them up 6-0. A third drive was going well early in the second quarter, but stalled near the OSU 20. A field goal attempt from 38 yards was missed. That turned the tide

The OSU offense woke up in a hurry, and drove quickly downfield to score a TD to take the lead. That 4 play, 72 yard drive, took just 37 seconds, and stunned the Cougars, who were totally shutting down OSU up to that point. Another WSU drive got down to the four yard line, but the chip shot field goal was missed. WSU never got close again. Ohio State lead 7-6 at halftime.

The Buckeyes' defense dominated the second half, pressuring Cougar QB Gesser time and again. Meanwhile, OSU signal caller Germaine couldn't miss, and drove his team for two more TDs in the second half. The Buckeyes capped a 9 play, 65 yard drive with a Montgomery 1 yard run in the third quarter to make it 14-6. OSU ground out a 13-play, 90 yard drive with Germaine connecting with WR Boston from 18 yards out early in the fourth quarter to make it 21-6.

Two late interceptions sealed the Cougars' fate, and the Buckeyes move on to the third round. Germaine was 16 of 21 for 209 yards and 2 TDs. Gesser was just 17 of 37 for 155 yards and 2 INTs. WSU's Green was the game's leading rusher with 54 yards on 18 carries. Montgomery had 52 yards on 13 carries for the Buckeyes.B.
