HOME CALENDAR BRACKETS COACHES RESULTS RULES

95-Northwestern 28, 01-N.Illinois 12:  DALLAS (AP)--  Sparked by the running of Darnell
Autry, the Northwestern Wildcats defeated the Northern Illinois Huskies 28-12 in the first round of the 1995-2004 NCAA Football Tournament.  The Cotton Bowl crowd witnessed Autry gain 156 yards on 25 carries, including a 71 yard dash for a touchdown, which paced the Wildcats to victory. With the Huskies defense focused on stopping Autry, Wildcats QB Steve Schnur was able to complete 62% of his passes (10 for 16) including two touchdowns en route to a 131.5 passing
efficiency rating.

99-Wisconsin 23, 02-Boise St. 17:  TEMPE (AP)--The Badger offense may be one dimensional, but it’s effective. Dayne left, Dayne right and Dayne up the middle was the Badger’s game plan and it worked. The Great Dane rushed for 179 yards on 33 carries as the Badgers rolled up 241 yards on the ground as Wisconsin beat Boise State 23-17.  Boise State’s star QB Dinwiddle completed only 17-38 for 267 yards, 53 coming on a last minute Hail Mary pass.  Wisconsin moves on and faces the winner of the Arizona State-Miami of Ohio contest next week.   (contributed by Karl Schindl)
02-Kansas St. 33, 01-Florida 17:  TEMPE (AP)--K-State uses a stout red zone defense and a Roberson-Sproules ground attact to defeat the Gators....... (contributed by Crawford Davis)
99-Florida 52, 04-Cal 28:  Miami (AP)--Heisman Trophy Winner Danny Wuerffel had too many options for California to defend as he threw for over 400 yards and 3 TD !  Jacquez Green Scored 3 TD including one for a 64 yard Punt Return in the 3rd quarter.  J.J. Arrington attempted to carry Cal on his back, but his 219 yard rampage was not enough as senior QB Aaron Rodgers had a subpar day....... (contributed by M.Weiss)
96-Arizona St. 27, 03-Miami (Oh) 17:  TEMPE (AP)--Miami (Oh) Coach Marc Weiss was still mumbling under his breath that this was really an ASU home game and not a "neutral site" afair that the tournament committee promise.  Be that as it may, the game was a classic with ASU coach Steve Thum calling all the right plays at all the right moments.  Big Ben Roethlisberger put on an aerial barrage but ASU running sensation Terry Battle managed to hit paydirt twice as ASU held on for victory....... (contributed by DistantReplay.org)
00-Fla St 42, 04-Navy 0:  MIAMI (AP)--The headlines read, "Noles sink Navy in this classic mismatch.  Heisman winner Chris Weinke threw 3 TD passes in the 1st quarter as Navy coach Bill Keller watch on in dismay.  FSU coach Steve Sobel rested his regulars for most of the 2nd half as he prepared to move onto the 2nd round....... (contributed by DistantReplay.org)
97-Tennessee 19, 96-Syracuse 17:  DALLAS (AP)-- In a game that was billed as a battle between two future NFL All-Pro QB's,  the defense for both teams decided to make a name for themselves.  Both Peyton Manning and Donovan McNabb had sub par days and QB ratings that were less than 60.  Syracuse almost managed to pull the upset off as they were leading 17-12 mid way thru the 4th quarter when Peyton rallied his troops for the go-ahead score.  Star offensive weapons Jamaal Lewis and Peerless Price never got on track as coach Todd Hopkins Syracuse defense managed to stymie coach Jeff Shelton's offense and almost pull off the upset........ (contributed by DistantReplay.org)
01-Miami (Fla) 52, 95-Colorado 21:  MIAMI (AP)-- Colorado jumped out to a quick 7-0, which awakened the sleeping Hurricanes who managed to punish the Buffalos on both sides of the ball in this one sided contest.  Heisman winner Ken Dorsey was near perfect with both is arm and his legs........ (contributed by DistantReplay.org)
03-Oklahoma 35, 04-Minnesota 14:  FRENCH QUARTER (AP)-- Minnesota and Marion Barber III scored first and last.  Unfortunately for the Golden Gophers they ran into a dominant Sooner squad that scored everytime in between.  Jason White was masterful for coach Cliff Dolgins........ (contributed by DistantReplay.org)
98-Ohio St. 31, 04-Texas Tech 14:  DALLAS (AP)--
In a first round match up at the Cotton Bowl. The Ohio State Buckeye's had their hands full with a well coached Texas Tech Red Raiders team.  The Bucks jumped out to a 14-0 led only to have Tech tie the game by half. It would stay that way till 5:01 left in the 3rd as TB, Mike Wiley ran to paydirt from 14 yards to break the tie. OSU would add 10 more points in the 4th to pull away in a hard fought game.  The 1998 Ohio State defense that has 8 starters drafted by the NFL, with future 4 first round picks and the entire secondary picked by the pro's. Was put to the test by some good play calling and a strong WRs group of Tech.  Next up for Ohio State in the second round, is a Big 10 rival Northwestern. A first round winner over Northern ILL.  (contributed by Steve Z)
98-Tennessee 38, 01-Hawaii 17:  FRENCH QUARTER (AP)-- Coach Steve Sobel was interviewed after the game and was thankful that he "kept it respectable" in a game that had colasal blow written all over it.  Hawaii had no answer on defense for the one two punch of the Travis boys (Henry and Stephens).  Tee Martin threw only 8 times and completed 6 of those........ (contributed by DistantReplay.org)
04-USC 33, 00-Va Tech 10:  FRENCH QUARTER (AP)-- Reggie Bush with the long run...Reggie Bush making a spectacular catch...Reggie Bush returning punts !  Is there anything this super Frosh star can't do ?  In a game that was supposed to feature two top QB's (Matt Leinhart and Michael Vick) Reggie Bush stole the show and on the way crushed the hopes of the Hokie faithful........ (contributed by DistantReplay.org)
00-Oregon St. 29, 99-Michigan 22:  FRENCH QUARTER (AP)-- The Beavers defense brought their "A" game and frustrated future Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady into throwing 3 big interceptions in a game that can be classified as a "minor" upset ........ (contributed by DistantReplay.org)
98-Air Force 28, 99-Penn St. 20:  TEMPE (AP)-- Matt Farmer caught 4 passes for 121 yard and scored 2 TD's, 1 via run and the other on a punt return en route to a big victory for the Falcons.  Jo Pa's Nittany Lions couldn't overcome the Falcon defense or Lt. Farmer........ (contributed by DistantReplay.org)
97-N.Carolina 34, 02-Iowa 10:  MIAMI (AP)-- At the half Iowa had a 10-6 lead, then the floodgates opened and one Mr. Jonathan Linton took over and ran the ball down the Hawkeyes throats.  Linton missed eclipsing the 200 yard mark by 2 yards.  His two TD's were key as UNC's vaunted defense did not allow Iowa an offensive TD all night........ (contributed by DistantReplay.org)
04-Auburn 30, 98-Tulane 24:  FRENCH QUARTER (AP)-- Jason Campbell's 88% completion percentage was just good enough for the Tigers to escape an upset by Tulane.  In a battle of teams that were unbeaten/uncrowned in their respective seasons this game went down to the wire and showed why each deserved the opportunity to play for their respective national championships........ (contributed by DistantReplay.org)
00-Va Tech 33, 04-Louisville 7:  DALLAS (AP)-- Michael Vick relied on his arm instead of his feet as the Hokies crushed the Cardinals in a lopsided affair........ (contributed by DistantReplay.org)
02-Georgia 20, 97-Michigan 10:  MIAMI (AP)--  In the first major upset of the tournament the '02 Georgia Bulldogs defeated the '97 National Champion Michigan Wolverines 20 -10. Michigan was unable to sustain much offense against a stingy Georgia Defense with Michigan being held to only 95 yds on the ground. Griese had a critical fumble in the first quarter that put Georgia up by 10 and the Wolverines played from behind the entire game. Griese throw for 216 yds while completing 15 of 23 passes. For the Bulldogs it was MVP Musa Smith (pictured) who rushed for a game high 129 yds while scoring on 30 and 33 yd runs. Bulldog qb Greene was efficient completing 15 for 31passes while having no turnovers. For the most part this was a defense struggle with the two teams only able to get a combined 23 first downs.   ........ (contributed by Stu Geller)
04-UTAH 23, 95-Nebraska 10:  DALLAS (AP)--  Utah prevails on 2 TD passes from Alex Smith to Steve Savoy and just enough defense to "hold" Nebraska to 133 yards rushing for the game.  Tommy Frazier had an off day for the Cornhuskers with 9 carries for 7 yards and 2 interceptions.   ........ (contributed by Ken Bartell)
02-Wash St. 24, 00-Wash 0:  DALLAS (AP)--  State crushed UW.  According to Coach Brandon Zoldaz, "Tuiasosopo gave me no chance to compete as he was intercepted I think 3 times, fumbled once, sacked 5 times."   ........ (contributed by Brandon Zoldaz)
99-Mich St. 20, 98-Wisconsin 16:  MIAMI (AP)--The Spartan defense kept "The Great" Dayne in check all afternoon and limited him to 100 yard on 35 carried for a 2.9 yard average.  His counterpart from East Lansing, Lloyd Clemons ran roughshod over the Badger defense to the tune of 119 yards on only 26 carries.  State coach Andy Weinrib won the game with some fantastic play calling down the stretch.  Instead of going to a conservative Prevent style defense he decided to play straight up and stop Wisconsin, which attempted to run Dayne and gain some cheap yards to setup the game winning score.   (contributed by DistantReplay)
96-Notre Dame 20, 00-Toledo 13  FRENCH QUARTER (AP)--The Irish dominated on the field, but not on the scoreboard thanks to key penalties and turnovers.  QB Ron Powlus had a miserable day and almost squandered the fine running of tailback Autry Denson who gained over 150 yards and was virtually unstoppable.  The turning point in the game came late in the 4th quarter with the score knotted at 10 and Toledo forced to punt.  Denson turned on the burners and rambled 81 yards to paydirt and put Notre Dame ahead for good.   (contributed by DistantReplay)
97-UCLA 38, 98-Mizzou 28  FRENCH QUARTER (AP)--Mizzou jumped out to an impressive 28-6 half time lead, but Jeff Lauber's Bruins refused to quit and rambled off 32 unanswered 2nd half point en-route to victory.  Cade McNown was impressive leading UCLA to a tournament record come from behind victory.  Sub-coach Bill Baker couldn't believe his eyes as the Tigers imploded right in front of his keyboard.   (contributed by DistantReplay)
03-LSU 20, 99-Marshall 3  TEMPE (AP)--LSU was able to stop Marshall's running game which in turn allowed LSU put pressure on Chad Pennington all night. LSU took advantage of some early opportunities which lead to a victory.  Matt Mauck threw for over 300+ yards and the defense was in championship form. (contributed by Andy Weinrib)
02-Ohio St 25, 02-Alabama 13:  FRENCH QUARTER (AP)-- OSU jumped out to a quick 17-0 lead only to let the Tide back into it in the 4th.  With the score 17-13, Craig Krenzel led the Buckeyes on a 8 play 86 yard drive that sealed the victory........ (contributed by DistantReplay.org)
04-Georgia 44, 98-Arizona 24:  TEMPE (AP)-- Arizona jumped out to a 14-7 first quarter lead then got bulldozed by the 'dawgs and southpaw David Green........ (contributed by DistantReplay.org)
