99-Wisconsin 23, 02-Boise St. 17: TEMPE (AP)--The
Badger offense may be one dimensional, but it’s effective. Dayne
left, Dayne right and Dayne up the middle was the Badger’s game plan
and it worked. The Great Dane rushed for 179 yards on 33 carries as
the Badgers rolled up 241 yards on the ground as Wisconsin beat Boise
State 23-17. Boise State’s star QB Dinwiddle completed only 17-38
for 267 yards, 53 coming on a last minute Hail Mary pass. Wisconsin
moves on and faces the winner of the Arizona State-Miami of Ohio
contest next week. (contributed

St. 27, 03-Miami (Oh) 17: TEMPE (AP)--Miami (Oh) Coach
Marc Weiss was still mumbling under his breath that this was really
an ASU home game and not a "neutral site" afair that the tournament
committee promise. Be that as it may, the game was a classic
with ASU coach Steve Thum calling all the right plays at all the
right moments. Big Ben Roethlisberger put on an aerial barrage
but ASU running sensation Terry Battle managed to hit paydirt twice
as ASU held on for victory....... (contributed

97-Tennessee 19, 96-Syracuse 17: DALLAS (AP)--
In
a game that was billed as a battle between two future NFL All-Pro QB's, the defense for both teams decided to make a name for
themselves.
Both
Peyton Manning and Donovan McNabb had sub par days and QB ratings
that were less than 60. Syracuse almost managed to pull the
upset off as they were leading 17-12 mid way thru the 4th quarter
when Peyton rallied his troops for the go-ahead score. Star
offensive weapons Jamaal Lewis and Peerless Price never got on track
as coach Todd Hopkins Syracuse defense managed to stymie coach Jeff
Shelton's offense and almost pull off the upset........ (contributed

98-Ohio St.
31, 04-Texas Tech 14: DALLAS (AP)--
In a first round match up at the Cotton Bowl. The Ohio State
Buckeye's had their hands full with a well coached Texas Tech Red
Raiders team. The Bucks jumped out to a 14-0 led only to have
Tech tie the game by half. It would stay that way till 5:01 left in
the 3rd as TB, Mike Wiley ran to paydirt from 14 yards to break the
tie. OSU would add 10 more points in the 4th to pull away in a hard
fought game. The 1998 Ohio State defense that has 8 starters
drafted by the NFL, with future 4 first round picks and the entire
secondary picked by the pro's. Was put to the test by some good
play calling and a strong WRs group of Tech. Next up for Ohio
State in the second round, is a Big 10 rival Northwestern. A first
round winner over Northern ILL. (contributed

98-Tennessee 38, 01-Hawaii 17: FRENCH QUARTER (AP)--
Coach Steve Sobel was interviewed after the game and was thankful
that he "kept it respectable" in a game that had colasal blow written

only 8 times and completed 6 of those........ (contributed

(AP)-- In the first major upset of the tournament the '02
Georgia Bulldogs defeated the '97 National Champion Michigan

99-Mich St. 20, 98-Wisconsin 16: MIAMI (AP)--The
Spartan defense kept "The Great" Dayne in check all afternoon and
limited him to 100 yard on 35 carried for a 2.9 yard average.
His counterpart from East Lansing, Lloyd Clemons ran roughshod over
the Badger defense to the tune of 119 yards on only 26 carries.
State coach Andy Weinrib won the game with some fantastic play
calling down the stretch. Instead of going to a conservative
Prevent style defense he decided to play straight up and stop
Wisconsin, which attempted to run Dayne and gain some cheap yards to
setup the game winning score. (contributed

turning point in the game came late in the 4th quarter with the score
knotted at 10 and Toledo forced to punt. Denson turned on the

good. (contributed
